Bunche, winner of the 1950 Nobel Prize for Peace and director of the United Nations Department of Trusteeship, was cited this week j for his “great humanitarianism,! his insight into the relations ofj mankind, his sound judgment in the ordering of public affairs, and his warmth of intelligent fellow ship,” when he received the hon orary degree of Doctor of Laws from St. Louis University. WILLIAMS TON — (ANP) — j A suit was filed last week against the Martin County Board of edu cation charging discrimination all along the line and asking for compensatory and $500,000 puni tive damages. Also named as defendants in the suit were members of the North Carolina State Board of Educa tion. J. C. Manning is county superintendent. The action was taken by 19 plaintiffs seeking relief from what they term discriminatory practices of the school officials. They claim that there are inequalities be tween the white and Negro public schools in the county. The suit was filed in the Eastern Federal court at Washington, N. C. The petitioners, located mostly in one community in the county, seek mandatory action of the court or an injunction restraining the | county from continuing its dis criminatory practices. The defendants have 20 days in which to file an answer to the suit, one of the largest ever brought in Martin county.
