However, he ran the 100 yards in 9.6 seconds, and stepped off the 130 yards in 12.2 seconds. Shortly after his arrival here, Ewell suffered a slight back in jury but recovered fast . . . A Center of Christian Infleunce. in Ephesus Paul lound the nuc leus of a church, and began work with those believers, teaching them about the Holy Spirit. He also labored among non-Chrisian Jews. Today we neglect them, or else hold aloof. We may con tribute to Jewish missions else- ' where but not show kindness to ; Jewish neighbors. More Jew s be come Christians because of kind- J ness than through argument. They cannot resist Christlike love. Growing Opposition. Paul did not succeed with everyone; neither did our Lord. Some seeds fell on stony ground. Books about per- | sonal work sometimes make a Christian feel that simply by ex tending invitations he can w’in re cruits for Christ, but not every body accepts. Some do so only after months or years. Those who do not receive the Gospel may become hardened. Paul under stood such fanaticism, for he had persecuted the saints. When he came face to face with Christ, j this man w'ith the stony heart be gan to be gentle and kind. Would that Josef Stalin might have had such an experience as a young man exposed to Christian ity! He seems not to have met the right sort of believers. Faith Under Trial. Because of opposition, Paul the missionary had to leave that synagogue. Soon he found another open door. He I trusted God for ways and means | to carry on the work. At the age ] of tw’enty Charles H. Spurgeon became pastor of a London church far from strong. From outsiders he met opposition and abuse. In the biography his wife tells how he learned to trust in the Lord. When they started life together they agreed never to go in debt. Not long afterward he came to her in distress. “Wifey, 1 must give up hiring the horse and walk to church every time I preach.” She knew he had neither time nor strength for such walking. So they laid the- matter before the Lord in prayer. The next morning they received from a stranger a letter enclosing twenty pounds, the ex act sum they needed. “Ever after ward,” she wrote, “I do not re member seeing him painfully anx ious concerning supplies for any of his great w'orks. Hope you enjoyed the visit with me. See you again next week same time, same station. Bye for now, BERT. perfect, and he lacked nothing.’ Such faith shows how a man like Paul could go into a sinful Ephesus and establish a church. Without equipment and money, prestige and influence, or anything the world counts necessary, with in three years he put that church on the map. Wherein lay his pow er? He trusted in the Lord! “My God shall supply every need o< yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philip pians 4:19). • Patronize Our Advertisers—they are making: this publication pos sible.
