Lately, I’ve been reading some poems by Negro poets. Somehow or another, a Negro poet can, by his great experience, express a great spirit in his poems which those that haven’t had quite the same experiences find hard to express. I like the following po em for it shows greatness in our race and a great desire for the recognition that we hope to re ceive some day. This great poem holds deep meaning for Christians. Simon The Cyrenian Speaks He never spoke a word to me, And yet He called my name; He, never gave a sign to me, And yet I knew and came. At first I said, “I will not bear His cross upon my back; He only seeks to place it there Because my skin is black. But He was dying for a dream, And He was very meek, And in His eyes there shone a gleam Men journey far to seek. It was Himself my pity bought; I did for Christ alone What all of Rome could not have wrought With bruise of lash or stone. —Countee Cullen. Poem The night is beautiful, So are the faces of my people. s The stars are beautiful, So are the eyes of my people. Beautiful, also, is the sun. Beautiful, also, are the souls of my people. As a race, we, ourselves, must develop race pride. We must be happy and proud that God made us as He did. All of God’s cre ations have beauty but so few of us realize it. sires (sets. What do you know this week? Not much, I gather because you haven’t told me any news. The thing that would have been the center of interest this week was the hayrack ride to be given by Susie May Whitehall, but due to the tragic accident in Omaha it was canceled. (Tough luck, kids) Last Saturday afternoon found many boys and girls with nothing to do in the line of work I mean because they were playing foot ball for a little exercise. Well, girls, the great football hero also has a motorcycle. I saw him coasting around 22nd and S Sunday afternoon. I noticed a thing of interest in the Omaha Star this week. It is a column written by one of our old friends Mattie Sue Nevels. I want to congratulate Fletcher (Jon Rosco) Bell on his closing note in last week’s Omahq Star about the friend wanting the dime. I thought it rather nifty. COMPLETE FUR SERVICE HORACE E.
