Handy Theme—“Guidance from Great Proverbs. Proverbs 3:5-7; 4:23; 6: 16-19; 9:10. A Good name. Nothing is as valuable to a man or a business as “good will.” “He who steals my purse, steals trash, but he who filches my good name takes that which does not enrich him, but leaves me poor indeed.” What is the value of a name like Tiffany or Brentano? Your name cannot be good without inner worth. All super ficiality, all destructive tendency must be swept aside by him who aspires to the creation of a good name. Said Ruskin, “He who would do something, must first be something.” Worth will out, as well as murder.” Weekly letters come to my desk asking about young people as well as adults. Questions like these are there: “Does he drink?” “Does he gamble?” “Is he happy in his domestic relations?” “Does he pay his debts?” and many sim ilar inquiries. Tell me, does it pay to build up a good name? One foolish move, one wild ac tion may ruin your reputation. Let a man be found drunk in some hotel, let a woman be seen in evil company or at a questionable resort, let a youth be caught with low companions, and the priceless name is soiled, maybe fatally. To build up, through the years, a family name of honor and worth is, therefore, one of the proudest and most laborious works of, man. He who inherits a good name should be most care ful in the wearing of it. A good name does not happen, it is achieved. What denial, what devotion, what prayer, what med itation, what difficult service, what unselfishness, what hours with God, what absolute fidelity go into the fashioning of a fair name.—Condensed from a sermon by John R. Ewers in the Chris tian Pulpit. The secret of Nobility of Life, Proverbs 3:23. It is to be re membered that for the Hebrews the heart was not thought of as the seat of the emotions as it is thought and will. It was in the with us. It was the center of heart that a man chose his aims and selected the motives to which he was to give obedience. There, this verse says, he deter mines his destiny. It is a solemn warning against toying with evil thoughts, or low thoughts or cheap thoughts. High thinking and res olute fidelity to high ideals mean nobility of life.—Tarbell. Never put off till tomorrow that which you can do today.— Franklin.
