We are told that the time of the day was “about noon” when the vision was seen. The mid-day glare of an eastern sun of itself is exceedingly bright, and the hour was chosen, we cannot doubt in order that the “glory” of this heaven-sent light should not be confounded with any natural phenomenon. It was in the midst of this glory that Christ was seen by Saul, so that he can enumer ate himself among those who had beheld the Lord after His res urrection. This was a very se vere thing. They were expect ing him in Damascus; those op posed to Christ were expecting him as their leader; and those with Christ were expecting him as a great enemy. I think when I get to heaven I shall want to know what became of the High Priest’s letters. He who had come armed with official authority to end the Nazarene heresy, was led in, the blind slave of Christ. He receives his sight at the hands of Ananias a disciple at Damas cus, the laying on of the hands and the reception of the Holy Ghost. The full extent of his com mission was only gradually un folded to him. His office, then, was to be (1) a minister of the word—which denotes the humble personal service, in which Paul rejoiced to labour as the slave of the Lord; and (2) a witness—by which he was raised to the level of the Twelve. For the witness which constituted an apostle, and which St. Paul was to bear, was witness to the resurrection of the Lord, whom he had now seen in the vision and was to see again. —--- + Congratulations... .
