This is the first time a Plattsmouth physician has ever been honored in so distinguished a manner, and we hope the doctor will do himself and his home city credit. F. II. Freund, and several other Plattsmouth friends, went to Omaha this morning to hear him. The kids about town got up a new sort of secret society. Washington, D. C, Juno 38. The navy department today posted the fol lowing bulletfn: Admiral Sampson reports that the Yale arrived yesterday and discharged her troops. Captain Sigsbee reports that Wed nesday afternoon, while off Sao Jaun, he was att tcked by a Spanish unpro tected cruiser and the Spanish torped boat destroyer Terror. The Terror made a dash, which waa awaited by the St. Paul. The St. Paul hit the Terror three times, kill ing one officer and two men and wounding several others. The Terror dropped back under covor of the fort lfications with difficulty, and waa towed into harbor in a sinking condi tion, where she is now being repaired Later a gunboat and cruiser started out but remained under protecrion of the forts. C, June 28.-9,000 men leave Tampa today on transports to reinforce Shaftor, proceeding- via Koy West. Third Itegiiuent Appolntmeut. Governor Holcomb yesterday com pleted the list of important regiment al officers of tho Third regiment, says the State Journal. John II. McClay of Lincoln, was appointed senior ma jor, and C. F. Beck was made adjutant. with the rank of first lieutenant. W F. Schwind of Lincoln was slated from tho start as quartermaster. His appointment was officially announced yesterday, and he was given the rank of first lieutenant. Mr. Beck is deputy superintendent of public instruction. He waa form erlv captain of a company in the Ne braska national guard and was elected county superintendent of Burt county State Superintendent Jackaon wil hold Mr. Beck's place open for him but will fill it temporarily by appoint ing N. M. Graham, formerly county superintendent of Clay county. Governor Holcomb ha9 appointed all the regimental officera except the chaplain. The list is as follows: Col W. J. Bryan, Lincoln; lieutenant-col onel, Victor Vifquain, Lincoln; senior major, John H. McClay, Lincoln; jun ior major, Conrad F. Scharmp.nn, North Platte; adjutenant, C. F. Beck Tokamah; quartermaster, W. F, Schwind, Lincoln; surgeon, Dr. O Grothan, St. Paul; assistant eurgeona Dr. Ralph J. Irwin of Hastings, and Dr. A. P. Fitzsimmons of Tecumseh. Lieutenant Hugh J. Gallagher of the Sixth United States cavalry, who was assigned before the war broke out to act as aid to Governor Holcomb, has been promoted and is now major, assigned as chief commisary of sub- sistance in the Fourth army corps. Robert Brown of Lincoln received orders yesterday to proceed with band to be mustered in at Omaha as the Third regimental band. There will be twenty-two pieces in the or ganization besides one chief musician and two principal musicians. Texas Watermelons Are Here. The watermelon a which are to be the center of attraction on "Texas Melon and Grape Day," which is set for Fri dry of this week, have arrivid and will be placed on exibition on ice in the Horticulture building at once. Tha melons are big, juicy specimens of the best grades produced in the fertile re gion along the gulf coast in tho south of Texas and a look at them ia enough to make the mouth water in pleasant anticipation. Bryan has appointed him assistant regimental quartermaster with rank of lieuten ant. The position is a good one, and Charley began hii work there this morning. Harry Kauffman, one of the most genial traveling men on the road out of New York, waa in town ye8terday representing the great clothing house of Naumburg, Kraua & Co., one of the oldest bousea in the United States. Mr. Kauffman i8 a thirty-two degree Mason and has an army of friends, not a few of whom reside in thia city.
