One of the best possible open ings that exist today for the invest ment of I'latlsiiioulh capital in a tnan ufaetuiing institution has been made by the successful invention in this city by Mr. Thompson of his elevated l i ra chairs; they have been tiled and leslcd; Waterman n,.i i.t house is seat ed with them and tl.ty ue proven just w hat nas been .Uiuitd tor llieui. I'riva'e letleri fioni the pat ent office as Washington also commend the invention iu the highest terms. Their is no question of its practicabil ity. Iu this Missouri valley country, in this ne.r west there are a thousand young and grow ing cities which build publie halls and which will demand just such seats whi'.'h are both elsvat rd ami movable, and a: I'I ittsmoiith in the centre of t.os great western codn try is the place to manufacture, them. Capitalists in Omaha have told diffei eat tin t it a iu riattsm nth that Mr. Thompson would receive aptopositiiH f i i.m Muaha men to go lo that city and a factory would be established. A furniture factory can be ruaCe big hives. mem iu thi3 city and for the follow ing good and sufficient reasons: We have cheap ground, good brick and gontl stone for building material. Wo have cheap lots w hich w ill make cheap homes for laborers. We are at the gateway to the Iowa cjal fields, which warrants as cheap fuel as any town iu the w est can secure. We are closo to the state of Missouri, w hich posessees an abundance of timber of the kind for the manufacture of furniture. We are txcellenily located for shipments of manufactured goods through Xe br.isk;', Kanias.Iowa and the Teiritor tici. We mod iu establishing a furniture factory, on- staple leading article, and Mr. Thompson's patent chairs furnish that arlich. Furniture is, as staph-, in the trade as tlour. It is shipped into Nebraska from eastern factories, at an enoi mo.u expens of frieglitage; cheap t vetytlay furniture needs no ii.i'.li.in j i:iv.'s.cd in a factory for its manufacture, and it is always billable. In manufacturing one leading arti cle like t ho opera chans eve;y scrap and fragment can be utilized in small er and cheaper f iirnit.ire. Wholesale houses in the. state could buy Nebraska manufactured furniture and save two thirds the freight they now pay from easu t n cii ies. Will not this help in meeting competition and will not home woik and bom.' production receive consideration 'i The IIl.K.VLD does not advocate ;his on its own thought ami investigation, tut after consultation Willi citizens old in experience and capitalists of t is city and Lincoln and Omaha, and the conclusion v.e reach we belfeve every man who investigates th;? ques tion will endorse. The 15. .v M. Manu facture id f'iattsmoiiih cheaper than they can in the east, and it staple sala ble article can be made by a inattufac t u: ing company in th's ciiy iu com petition wiih the east as well. Every lab jt ing man, evciy rutin who has a home in l'lattsmouth, every business man ami capittli-ft is interested iu this and the llEK.VI.b has i o doubt of the duty the city owes itself in this mat ter. The Heualu is informed tnat the Journal man has spuds when sdtcp forsalifs his pillow, when visions takt shape, when w itches aie abroad, and evil spirits sing matins and that at these times rest is secured only by writing up fraud; we arc further told that to this fact the bar of the city is indebted for the elaborate attack upon themselves and Judge I'ouud lasfc week. The Hkkald would mildly and impassionately suggest to its high ly esteemed cotemporary that the trouble may not be in his head but in some other portion of Ins anatomy which might be reached with M Jacobs oil. or (linger Tonic; at least to flee these evils, this advice is worth yivcs tigatiun. Isaac Wiles, who retires the present mouth from the boa id of county com missioners, goes, leaving behind him a record of industry and watchfulness in county interests, that he has main tained throughout his term, and that has done much to place the board in the Confidence w it'i the entire public that it enjoys. We believe that Cas coun ty has never had a more thoroiighly competent board than the i elii int one ; ami certainly Capt. Wiles relin quishes his ofil.ta! .1 uties. possessing the esteem and contiaci.ee cf the peo ple of Cass county irrespective .i sec lion or politics. The jear just closing has been a prosperous one to this city, and its business men. It has also been a prosperous one to Cass county ami its farmers. The latter have harvested a heavy crop, no epidemics have pre vailed among their flocks and herds, general prosperity smiles upon all at the close of the year. No one can look back without seeing many things for which to be thankful, and the good in the past is a continuous prom ise for good in the future; and to jtll in city and county the Herald sends forth nniight bat good Wishes for the New Year. v r-B-t-BBB--B-BBS--B-Bri The Herald has been asked where was the Chief of l'olice on Christmas evening. As the Chief of Toiice is not of the IlERALD's endorsement or worthy our support, enquirers will ask those who placed hini in position. --S-BS-B-BBBS-SB One does not realize the labor of editorial work until he sees a Journal with two columus of editorial matter, one column a Washington letter and the other a column of state news clip- . - 1 . vs.-k n-H ped from some owi- H"e- TnE man who New Years will be' di "5foiT. on for Just about ten "N Why wo laugh, we can easily ex plain to Dr. Miller; wo laugh flrt to no.' him f-quirui. Then again it is laughable to oco the rood Doctor's conclusions that he deducts lrom the evidence; the way he distorts facts and statements; the way he garbles evidence aud interprets statements; the way he wrecks t"st'uuony aud double and twists it to make sonic excuse for that search for fraud is very cxhilirating; and finally, wc laugh boiatrouslv to see the robust aud rotuud editor of the Omaha Her uld trying to crawl into a hole five sizes too small for him aud just as he thinks he is iu the hole and ready to pull it in after him, some miserable paper like the Omaha Kepublican or the l'lattsmouth Hkrai.d uncovers him aud shows hi:n up a little; aud the way he sweats and storms around promises to furnish an amusement loving community much more fun in the tuture. In fact, the Doctor is making a much more successful farco of it than those who knew him best expected, aud we don't propose to cease applauding as long as the red lights are burning, if we know our sclf. An amusement loving body will gather at the State capital next week and they fchall be called the Thiid House. Both of our stockings were well filled Christmas; we were around town all day. The lobby is mighty and in all probability will prevail. Closing Exercises of the Public Schools. Last Thursday and frieay evenings occurred the closing exercises of the public schools of this cit3', held in the new opera house and very large ly attended by our citizens, who in this way alone amply at tested their endoisement of these exhibitions which were in ev ery respect most creditable and were lull of instruction to the pupil, and a branch ol the school work that cannot fail to be of much good to the participants. The entertainment on the Grst even iug was given by the pupils of the lower grades, ami the Herald enthu siastically pronounces it by far the best entertainment of the two. The little folks did splendidly in every part which they took aud the programme was varied and full of in terest to all. The recitations although somewhat marred by the unavoidable noise attending such a congregation of little folks, were well given and were all so good it would not be jus tice to call any best. The May queen as given by some fifty of the little folks was tin event of the evening and the teachers who had charge of that can certainly be gartilied at the way it was given and received by the audience. Th6 first evening the opera house on tloor and iu gallery was crowded full and the second night also saw a very large at teudence. The failure of the pianoB in at riving broke into the programme of the second night badly but notwith standing that the audience seemed highly pleased with the work done by the pupils. During the first evening Prof.Drum- mond was presented with an elegant easy chair from the teachers and dur 3ng the closing days of the term sev eral of the teachers were remembered by their pupils in like manner. The Herald believes, both from ex perience and observation, that such exhibitions are of much benefit to the schools and pupils. Interest is awak ened and pupils in such work cultivate self possession and confidence, which is always a powerful aid in after years. The Herald further believes that such exhibitions are evidences of lifts and industry in a school which are at tendant elements of success.
