look back without seeing many things
for which to be thankful, and the
good in the past is a continuous prom

uld trying to crawl into a hole five
sizes too small for him aud just as he

pull it in after him, some miserable
paper like the Omaha Kepublican or
the l'lattsmouth Hkrai.d uncovers
him aud shows hi:n up a little; aud
the way he sweats and storms around
promises to furnish an amusement
loving community much more fun in
the tuture. In fact, the Doctor is
making a much more successful farco
of it than those who knew him best
expected, aud we don't propose to
cease applauding as long as the red
lights are burning, if we know our
sclf. An amusement loving body will
gather at the State capital next week
and they fchall be called the Thiid
House.
Both of our stockings were well
filled Christmas; we were around town
all day.
The lobby is mighty and in all
probability will prevail.
Closing Exercises of the Public Schools.
Last Thursday and frieay evenings
occurred the closing exercises of the
public schools of this cit3', held in
the new opera house and very large
ly attended by our citizens, who
in this way alone amply at
tested their endoisement of these
exhibitions which were in ev
ery respect most creditable and
were lull of instruction to the pupil,
and a branch ol the school work that
cannot fail to be of much good to the
participants.
The entertainment on the Grst even
iug was given by the pupils of the
lower grades, ami the Herald enthu
siastically pronounces it by far the
best entertainment of the two.
The little folks did splendidly in
every part which they took aud the
programme was varied and full of in
terest to all. The recitations although
somewhat marred by the unavoidable
noise attending such a congregation of
little folks, were well given and were
all so good it would not be jus
tice to call any best.
The May queen as given by some
fifty of the little folks was tin event
of the evening and the teachers who
had charge of that can certainly be
gartilied at the way it was given and
received by the audience. Th6 first
evening the opera house on tloor and
iu gallery was crowded full and the
second night also saw a very large at
teudence. The failure of the pianoB
in at riving broke into the programme
of the second night badly but notwith
standing that the audience seemed
highly pleased with the work done by
the pupils.
During the first evening Prof.Drum-
mond was presented with an elegant
easy chair from the teachers and dur
3ng the closing days of the term sev
eral of the teachers were remembered
by their pupils in like manner.
The Herald believes, both from ex
perience and observation, that such
exhibitions are of much benefit to the
schools and pupils. Interest is awak
ened and pupils in such work cultivate
self possession and confidence, which
is always a powerful aid in after years.
The Herald further believes that
such exhibitions are evidences of lifts
and industry in a school which are at
tendant elements of success.
