James went to Julian Wednesday.
Mr. Stephens has leased the lower
room in the Avoy building for a paint

Casner Barnes, of west Nemaha
precinct, gave us a short call Friday
of last week.
Eleven inches of rain fell during the
month of May. Almost 2 inches
foil last Saturday night.
Charley and Eugene IIowo, who
have boon attending tho Peru Normal
school, are at home again.
J. W. Taylor, of Lincoln, has beon
looking aft3r business matters in Ne
maha and vicinity this week.
Tho M.E. Ladies' Aid society cleared
over S15 at the ice cream supper given
the night of commencement.
Church IIowo gave us a social call
Monday afternoon. He camped with
the Nemaha peoplo that night.
Mrs: Cora Crother was quite sick
for several days, but under Dr. Mel
vin's treatment is almost well again.
J. II. Vceder is at home again the
school at Johnson having closed last
Friday. He informs us ho will prob
ably remain a citizen of Nemaha until
about the first of September.
The entertainment given at tho
opera houso Thursdaj night by Littlo
Carlio and Laureo Kroll was first class.
On account of th stormy weather a
vory small audienco was present.
Rev. P. Van Fleet, of Nobraska City
presiding elder of tho Nebraska City
district of the M. E. church, stopped in
Nemaha Friday night of last week,
and attondod the commencement ex
ercises. Arrangements are being made for a
Sunday School convention to be held at
Nemaha probably tho latter part of
this month, by tho Sunday schools of
Nemaha, Aspinwall and St. Doroin
precincts.
W. S. Earhart and family, of Ilorton
Kansas, arrived in Nomaha Wednesday
and will visit It. J. Duff and family
for a few days. Mr. Earhart is a broths
or of Mrs. Duff. lie drove through
from Ilorton.
Geo. Sutton and family were over
from IIowo Friday of lat week, and
attended the commencement exercises
Mr. and Mrs J. U. Borger went to
.Browuvilie Friday of last week and
visitad old friends until Thursday of
this week.

Wheeler's housu this week. Mrs.
Wheeler has had considerable work
done on the premises this spring, and
now has one of the most home-like

COMMENCEMENT,
The fourth annual commencement
of the Nemaha High school was held
at Hoover's opera houso last Friday
night. The exercises began with an
invocation by Ror. Van Fleot. Miss
Emma Crlra gave an Instrumental solo,
time was ilno. Then came the oration,
"Our Structurejjife," by tho one grad
uate this year, Miss Dora Morton. It
was well worded.and tho ideas brought
out were good. Misses Bosslo Vrost
and Bello Galbralth gave a duot in an
excollent mannor. Hev. C. II. Gilmore
delivered tho addresB which wasouoof
tho best over given foeio. The diploma
was then presented to the graduate by
tho president of the board, W. W.
Sandors. Modesty forbids us Baying
anything about tho speech, but truth
com pells us to say that Rev. Gilmore
has acted to' us since then just like a
man does when he is jealous of another,
and he probably didn't like it becauso
wo got tho most applause. MisB Maud
Minick then gave a vocal solo, which
was flnoly rendered.
Wm, H. Davonpott, tho principal,
gavo a Bhorttalk, in which some good
advice was given to tho school patrons
in regard to visiting tho school and
taking an lutorest in school matters.
Rov. C. II. Gilmoro plead guilty to
neglect, and by a rising vote almost
every one in tho audienco admitted
that thoy were also guilty, and prom .
tsed to do hotter in the future.
Tho school board, teachors and
grauuato desire to return thanks to
Miss Emma Crim for her valuable
assistance with the music, to Rev. C.
II. Gilmoro for his address, to Miss
Maud Minnick, and to all others who
assisted in the exercises.

Robt. Frost has been engaged for a
few days in laying a new floor in tho
old toll bridge south of Nemaha. He
expects to finish up tiiis week.
Miss Nora Elliott went to Fremont
Tuesday as a dolegato from the No
malm lodgo of the Eustorn Star to the
convention in session at that city.
Mrs. Woodward and Mrs. Keeling
drove up to Peru "Tuesday, to attend
the commencement exercises and visit
friends. They returned Wednesday.

Wm. H.IUvenport has been granted
a life teacher's certificate, as provided
by law, he being- a Normal graduate
and having taught successfully for
two years.
Mrs. II. A. Whoeldon returnod to
Wymore Wednesday, after a visit of
soveral days with Nemaha friends.
Her mother, Mrs. Jonnio Moore, went
homo with her.
Sam Anderson says he doesn't in
tend to try to compote with Minor
Taylor, but ho wants it understood
that ho has just as fino a "regulator"
as Minor has. If you want to find out
the correct time, give Sam a call.
This seems to bo locust year. The
locusts are so thick in tho woods that
a person can hear nothing when 'there
but the noise made by those insects
If they were as destructive as were the
grasshoppers till vegetation would be
destroyed

Edith Gilmore, daughter of Rev. C
H. Gilmore, met with a bad accident
last Sundav afternoon. She was visit
ing Nellio Sandors, and the two little
girls were running on a -boardJaid
across a puddle of water. Edith
slipped and fell on her knees on the
board, and a.nail ran into her leg just
below the kneo. Tho nail was a 0
penny wire nail and had beon driven
through tho three-quarter inch boaid
and beut over, but the sharp end was
sticking up far enough to catch tho
flesh, and it ran in tho full length '
tho nail, fastening her to tho board.
It took a hard pull to loosen her from
tho nail, and of course tho flesh was
badly lacerated. Dr. Keeling dressed
the wound. Ho says it was the worst
nail wound ho ever saw Editli suf
feied a great deal for soveral days, and
was confined to her bed and chair but
is able to walk around again, though
she will suffer from tho wound for
somo time yet.
Prof. Wm. II. Davenport, while
laboring under great difficulties during
the past year, has given tho patronB of
our school district most excollent sen
vice as principal. Wo hope ke will
succeed in whatevor avocation he may
pursue in the future lie went to St.
Joo a few days ago, where wo under,
stand ho has been offered a lu ratlve
position in the stack yards, with an
opportunity for rapin promotion.

Library Oo. of Fremont, Neb., has
been in Numaha soveral days this week
getting subscribers or members for a
library hero. Tho plan is to put fifty
volumes in a library. At tho und of
three months these books aro taken
away and are replaced by fifty volumes
of a different kind. This Ib kopt up
for five yenrs, giving tho subscribers
tlie benefit of a library of leoo volumes
at a very small cost. Tho library con
tains such a varied assortment that all
kinds orliterary tastes can bo suited.
The cost is very low S3 00 to join, to
be paid when the first library arrives,
and 10 cents each quarter after this, to
pay expenses of freight, librarian, etc.
The library will be at M. II. Taylor's
drug store.
At a mooting of the State Normal
board, hold at Peru Wednosday, Prof.
Boattlo, of Llncoln.was elected princl
pal of tho Normal. Tho nowly elected
principal has been one of the professors
at Cotner university for several years,
and ranks high among tho educators
of the stato.
The annual meetiug of the W. O. T.
U. of Nemaha county will be held in
the M.E. church at Peru Juno 10th
and 11th. An interesting program
has boen prepared. Peru extends a
welcome to all and will gladly enter
tain all delegates and visitors. Mrs.
Gates, the county president, writes us
that the convention will bo an excep
tionally good ono, in her opinion.

was looking after tho bridges that
wore washed out in this district. lie
reports six bridges gone. The most
of thorn have been replaced and the
romaindor will be rebuilt in a few
days.
