SeVeral cars of Bedford sand stone for tho federal building arrived this week. This stone is cut to fit at tho quarry and is ready to place in tho walls when it arrives. About one-half tho walls are of stone, the remainder pressed brick, the two forming a pretty combination. Retrenchment With a Vengeance. A Chicago dispatch says that follow ing plans for retrenchment, tho rail roads of tho country during the past year have laid off 81,870 men, affecting anlannual saving in operating expenses amounting to $94,000,000, according to a report mado public hero today. This method of economy has been adopted by 60 per cent of all the roads, and it is rapidly spreading to other lines. Do creaso in expense and maintenance is said to be the result of tho action of tho interstate commerce commission, which refused to permit an increase in freight rates. Personal Mention.
