One Year by Mail in advance $1.25 One Year by Carries in adranco $1.00 Entered at North 1'lattc, Nebraska, Post- offlco as Second Class Matter. TUESDAY JUNE 14, 1910. There to a possibility of A. E. Cady, of St. Paul, becoming a candidate for coventor. Ho does not seek the office, but has Indicated that he would accent the nomination. Wo regard Mr. Cauy as one of Nebraska's strongest men: a brainy and clean citizen, who would not in any event swore from the path of duty. ' ' Two hundred democrats of tho state attended the banquet held at Kearney Thursday evening. Governor Shdllen bcrger was present and urged that tho time was ripe for tho democratic party to take, up a moral Issue and fight the liquor question; while Mayor Dahlman In his speech made a strong plea for personal liberty and upheld the Slocumb law under which the saloons now oper ate. Ho favored tho removal of the state capital to some more central lo cation. It is expected that tho census will show a rather light increase in the population of Nebruska, and there is a feeling that something should be done to get more settlers to come to tho state. To this end the Nebraska editorial association at its meeting last month passed a resolution requesting tho coming session of the legislature to make an appropriation for. better advertising tho resources of the eta to to tho end that more people will be attracted here. All will agreo that such an act on the part of tho legisla ture would be money will spent. While it is customary for ministers to decry divorces, there are occasionally exceptions. Hov. Allen, pastor of the Marble Collegiato church and ono of tho strongest churches tn Wow York city, recently said: "If I nad my way an automatic divorce law would be insti tuted. A court where it was Dossible to obtain a divorso absolutely without cost. I would merely establish the one simple requirement that infidelity bo proven. Trio moment tho Injured party proved their injury tho divorso would go Into effect automatically." Tho supremo court has upheld the validity of tho employers' liability law passed by tho 1907 legislature This law provides that every railroad com pany operating a railroad engine, car or train in tho state of Nebraska shall bo liable to any of its employes who at tho time of injury aro engaged in con struction or repair work or in tho use or operation of any cngino, car, or train for Said company for Jail damages which may result from tho negligence of any of its officers, agents pr em ployes. The court says this is a valid law and not repugnant to the four teenth amendment to tho federal con stitution. The case involving the valid ity of this act camo from Omaha, whore an employe of tho U. P. shops was injured while operating a steam hammer. Winter wheat, over which there had been much anxiety all over tho United States, seems now to bo in better con dition than was anticipated. Tho gov ernment statistics gives tho averogo condition at 80, while lust year at this time It averaged 80.7., tho year boforo which was a bumper year, 80, and for tho last ten years it has ayernged 81.9. This ycar'B averago, therefore, is only 1.0 per cent below tho normal for a decade, which is not bad. Spring wheat's oAerago for tho years has been 93, and this year It Is 92.8. Oats is above tho ten-year averago, which is eo.4, noing turn year vi. cotton, too, Is thus far well above tho average. -tno average condition or wheat in Nebraska is not quito as good as tho gencrui averago given above. Mr, Farrington had been ill for some time and several weeks ago went to Excelsior Springs, Mo., for treatment. He. however, continued to grow worse, ana his wife was summoned there ten days ago. The physicians thero announced no hone, anil no was taken to an Omaha hospital for the purpose of submitting to an operation, should his strength permit. Ho failed to improve and last Friday his nephew, Asst. Supt. Tho following relative to Mr. Farring ton's life is taken from a sketch 'which appeared in u souvenir booklet issued a rouplo of years ogo by tho local division of tho B, of L. E: Ho was born In Callidonla County, Vermont, March 12th, 1840. His first railroading was in 1854, when he en tered tho service of the M. S. & N. This was tho second en gine brought to Omaha. Ho put this engine together and on track, and com menced running August Sd, I860. At this timo there woro but ono and one half miles of track built out of Omaha. Mr. Farrington was in tho continuous employ of the Union Pacific from Au gust 1865, to February, 1905, with tho exception of 1879 and 1880, when ho was running on theU. IS. & o. between Galesburg and Quincy, 111. In Febru ary, 1905, ho retired from active ser vico and was placed on tho pension roll of tho Union Pacific company. He was ono of tho charter members of Division 88, B. of L. E. when it was organized n Grand Island in July, 1867. Mr. Farrington was runnimron tholl. & St. J. all during the war and took tho first train load of soldiers to .tho battlo of Monroe. Tho rebels captured and burned the entire train of nine cars, ho getting away by cutting tho engine off' tho train. All train men at that timo wero enlisted to uvoid being drafted. He was a member of Co. I. 38th Reir. enrolled State Militia of tho stato of Missouri, and commissioned 2d Lieut. on September 2d, 1862, and was honor ably discharged July 27th, 186-1. Be tween above dates he was running an englnn continually. During this timo ho was shot at Innumerable times, fre quently a wholo volley at ono time, but tno cab of his englno from tho roof down was protected by boiler iron, and ho was never injured in this way but once, when ho was shot with buck shot in tho left leg, from his hip clear to his foot, and his fireman had ono fintror Bhot ofr at the same time. Tho only wuy shot could take effect on them was by being fired from tho rear of tho en- jjinu uner iney nan passea, anu it was n mat way no received tins injury.
