P. a vote of thankB. Carl Pierce, the well known pas eengcr conductor, who had been affected mentally for bouic time, died at his home in Omaha last Friday. Mr. Pierce had been in the service of the Uuion Pacific, first as an engineer and then as a passenger conductor, for nearly thirty years. During part of that time he made bis home in this city. Foot Ball Thanksgiving. Arrangements have been com pleted for a gamb of foot ball in this city on Thanksgiving Day be twecn the Kearney high pchool and the local high school elevens. The Kearney team w.ib here early in the season and Buffered defeat alter a very interesting and well con tested game. Since then they have been put through hard practice and arc said to be in much belter shape than at the former game. The lo cal team, however, has not been idle, and an iu better form than at any time during the season. The indicaticnv, therefore, arc that the game will be a cracker-jack. John Pohl, living north of Vro mau, was brought before the board of insanity Saturday for examina tion as to bis sanity. He was dis charged, the board qot considering him a fit subject for the asylum. A number of Hereford bulls were transferred from the Pawuee ranch east of Jhc county seat to the Pax ton ranch near Hershey the latter part of last week, Word was received in this local ity that Thos. C. Brown at one time a resident of Nicholr, where he was well and favorably known by many, was at this time foreman of the railroad yards at Ellensburg, Washington, and waH aleo no longer a confirmed old bachelor but had lately joined the matr.- monial ranks His many friends all wish him a happy and prospei ous life. The first series ot club dances recently organized at Hershey was held in the hall at that place on Friday evening last. It was at tended by about sixty who enjoyed a social time from start to finish. The music was up to date and all returned to their respective homes highly pleased over the first of the scriss. Two or. three parties from Wood bine, Ijwo, have been traveling over this part of the county lately with a number ot carriages and light Bpring wagons which they were trading for old buggies, horses, etc , in part payment on the satne. White, who resides on hid brother's farm, is hauling the ma terial from Hershey for a Hew barn soon to be erected on that farm. On the 17th of this month a num ber of young people assisted the Missss flattie and Hallie Pickett (twint-) celebrate their sixteenlh birtti anniversary at their home-in the village of Hershey. The young ladies were the recipients ot many fine and useful presents. The time was spent in different ways. Oysters were rerved and a jolly time is rrportcd. W. C. Cole has done more in the past two years for the farmers in this country in the way of purchas ing their hoge, cattle and grain than any other person that ever re sided in the valley. The corn harvest in the valley is drawing to a close. It is a grand tight to behold the large piles of com that is slacked up in this lo cality besides what has been fed and is in the cribs. It is also a great surprise to the growers themselves. Steve Albro who had a leg am puced at North Platte about two months ago is doing nicely. He was at the county seat on Satur day last for the first timi since the operation was pci formed. He was waB accompanied by his mother. The citizens of this locality har vested and loaded abot t ten acres ot sugar beets for him completing the pb on Friday last for which he hereby tenders his t-incere thanks to all those who participated iu the work.
