'5 Onk of Lincoln county's form er ardcnt.and conscientious pop ulists remarked to thin writer a few daj's ao that Hie populist party yas as dead as a mackerel and that just at present lie was a 'free lance," though the repub lican party is more attraclivc'to liim than is the democratic. lie, like many other populists, cannot understand how 20,000 democrats in the state managed lo strangle and swallow the 80,000 populists, and lo the dcmocrala he gives the full credit of the destruction of the populist party. Ilia views in this particular arc certainly correct and how he or any other populist could think of tempor arily occupying the democratic bed is beyond intelligent reason ing. To the populist who is now without a party, there should be no hesitancy as to where lie should So. An intelligent com parison q(ie record of Ihc re publican party with that of the democratic party will settle the matter mighty quick. Davis Micitcuit was renomi nated for congress by the rcpub licans of the Second district Sat urday, and as was expected the Omaha Bee says it will not recommend him to the voters of the district. This action on the TJce is due to a personal fight be tween Mercer and Roscwatcr during the senatorial struggle two years ago. Mercer fairly sc ctu:cd his rcnomination; the ma jority of the republicans of the district desired to sec him re turned lo congress, and this being true, Roscwatcr should abide the will of the majority, bury his personal spite and sup port Mercer. "We have always admired Mr. Roscwatcr's in domitable energy and his progressive spirit in the mater lal advancement of Omaha and Nebraska, but his rule or ruin policy in state politics is detest able and unworthy a man who possesses so high a Htanding in the business world. Notwith htanding the Bee's opposition Mr. -Mercer will be re-elected, because he has proven a good inau for Nebraska, Omaha and the republican party. Tuekh was a great perturba tion in Colorado Springs amonir the relatives of the lalcW. S. oi4iiuii uuiure ins will was opened, but this was nothing compared wiwi the excitement that followed the reading of that murium viii. aamt Hum a pittance of $450,000 that goes to relatives, uu oi tuc great tortune of the1 goid millionaire will be used in ; the establishment of tlm Myron Stratlon home for invalids in I Colorado Springs. It is one of the moat notable legacies of re centjimcs, when so many hun dreds of millions have been be-' Htowcd for the public service. State Journal. It is reported that John Pow ers, candidate for state auditor on the fusion ticket has tound holes in his fences in Howard county, where the democrats arc said to have been trading hiin for votes for Thompson. Mr. Pow ers is the only representative of old-fashioned populism on the state ticket and it will not be sur prising if the returns from the election reveal that he is too old fashioned to please the demo crats. This has been one of the greatest faults of the fusion scheme. The candidates of one parly can never be certain thai ihcy will have the support of the other. Norfolk News. A dispatch sent out from Co lumbus: Neb,, yesterday says: Tlfi.Nebraska Central Irrigation companyhassecurdd the backing ol eastern .capitalists, for its canal a'fVd' 'jioute'r' yrojectr After the examining expert jiad made hid report of the Lolumbus, Fremont and Plattsmoutli schemes, the .eastern men choso the local idea as the most feasible. Work will begin this fall, and some three million dollars will be expended in the canal and reservoirs. will be generated and- tens of thousands of acres of arid land will be irrigated. Mutual Insurance. The question of whether a school district can lawfujly in sure a school house in a mutual fire insurance company was raised ut a school meeting in Omaha recently. State superin tendent W. K. Fowler has se cured the following opinion from Attorney General Prout: "I beg to say tfiat school district officers have the power to insure school district piopcrty. Mutual Hre insurance companies arc author ized and recognized by t!c stat utes. One taking out a policy in such a company, however, be comes by that act a member of the company and assumics othisk DUTIHS AND HKSI'ONSlHIHTUCS WHICH AMIS NOT WITHIN TI1H OKDI NAKY I'OWISKK AND DUTIliS OF school disthicts, and while there is no statute prohibiting such action on the part of the school district, still I doubt the advisa bility ol or expediency of their becoming a member of such cor poration. I would advise, there fore, that if they desire lo insure the district property they take a policy in an old line company, pi y the premium on it and subject themselves to no other liability." --"Wond-Herald.
