As an offset to the question "who
reads an American book?" Col.
Higginson says the literary tone of
the United States is more serious,
more original, and in regard for ex
ternal forms cultivated than now
prevails in England. Reading is
now more general in the United
States than in any other country on
the globe.
There isn't a free trade organ in
the country that doesn't know that
domestic competition has been built
up by protection, and that it is this
that has made the prices of manu
factured goods low to the consumers.
And yet we have never seen a free
trade organ that was fair enough to
even concede the fact. Detroit Tribune.
In-revising our tariff laws and re
ducing customs revenues some in
terests should not be neglected.
Indeed, protection to our manufac
turers and laborers can' and should
be afforded by taxing only such im
ports as come into real competition
and admitting others free.. No one
disputes that the xepublicsn party
w in favor of thus affording protec
tion to our domestic industries.
Revenue laws should be enacted
with reference to our local condi
tions and wants. We should legis
late in the interest of our own pe'b
rather than the interest of mankind
at large. Judge Gresham.
Who is Your Beet Friend.
Your stomach of coarse. Why? Because if it
is out of order yoa are one of the most miserable
creatures living. Give it a fair honorable chance
and 6ee if it is not the best friend yoa have in the
end. Don't smoke in tho morning. Dont drink
in the morning. If yoa most 6moke and drink
wait till your stomach is through with breakfast.
Yoa can drink more and smoke more in the even
ing and it will tell on yoa less. If yoar food fer
ments and does not digest right, if yoa are
troubled with Heartburn. Dizziness of the head,
coming op of the food after eating. Biliousness,
Indigestion, or any other trouble of the stomach,
yoa had best ose Green's August Flower, as no
one can use it without immediate relief.
.The long contested Bell t tele
phone case lias at last been decided,
the' United States supreme court
having affirmed the validity of- the
Bell patent.. Justices Bradley,
Field and Harlan dissented, while
Justices Gray and Lamar did not
sit in the case, so that the decision
stands four to three in favor of the
Bell company. The court finds
that no evidence was adduced show
ing that Bell obtained inside in
formation from the patent office
relative to other inventions, thus
clearing the patent office and the
patentee from the charge of fraud
and collusion. The dissenting mem
bers of the court base their opinion
on Drawbaugh's telephone inven
tion, they claiming that the evi
dence shows overwhelmingly that
he was the first inventor of the
speaking telephone, although not
cognizant of the value of his inven
tion. This point, the decision
holds was not sustained by the evi
dence. ' How Men Die.
If we know nil the methods of approach
adopted by an enemy we are the better enabled
to ward off the danger and postpone tho moment
when surrender becomes inevitable. In many
instances the 'inherent strength'of the body suf
fices to enable it to oppose the tendency toward
death. Many, however, have lost these forces to
such an extent that there is little or no help..
In other cases a little help to the weakened lungs
will make all the difference between sudden
death and many years of useful life. Upon the
first' symptoms of a cough, cold or any trouble
of tho throat or longs, give that old and well,
known remedy Boschoe's German Syrup, a care
ful trial. It will prove what thousands 6ay of it
to be, the "benefactor of any home."
Ballard's Horehound Syrup.
A single bottle of Ballard's Horehond Syrup
kept about yoar honse for immediate nso will
prevent serioos sickness, a large doctor bill, and
perhaps death, by the ose of three or four doses.
For caring consumption its success has been
simply wonderful, and for ordinary coughs.colds,
sore throat, croup, whooping cough,- sore chest
hemorrhages its effects are (surprising and won
derful. Every bottle guaranteed. C. W. Price,
agent.
