up by protection, and that it is this

.The long contested Bell t tele
phone case lias at last been decided,
the' United States supreme court
having affirmed the validity of- the
Bell patent.. Justices Bradley,
Field and Harlan dissented, while
Justices Gray and Lamar did not
sit in the case, so that the decision
stands four to three in favor of the
Bell company. The court finds
that no evidence was adduced show
ing that Bell obtained inside in
formation from the patent office
relative to other inventions, thus
clearing the patent office and the
patentee from the charge of fraud
and collusion. The dissenting mem
bers of the court base their opinion
on Drawbaugh's telephone inven
tion, they claiming that the evi
dence shows overwhelmingly that
he was the first inventor of the
speaking telephone, although not
cognizant of the value of his inven
tion. This point, the decision
holds was not sustained by the evi
