FASHION
Although it is only August, whispers
of fall modes are already heard in the
realm of fashion. While we are wear
ing the thinnest of summery fabrics,
we are assured that velvets will be
worn during the coming new season to
an extent not seen for years, and that,
because of the lavish preparations for
the coronation in London, everything
"royal" will be in vogue. This means
that the vogue of ermine will be car
ried from last winter Into next, writes
the fashion dictator of the Philadel
phia Times. What with our velvets,
furs and laces, we were extravagant
last season, but a richer period In dress
is predicted for the coming winter than
has ever been known in this country.
Colored velvets will figure conspicu
ously in calculations for handsome
winter gowns. Not necessarily plain
velvets entirely, but those patterned
with contrasting lines and also spot
ted with polka dots like the foulard
silks. Gray velvet with lines of black
or white, or with white spots, will be
approved, shades of brown will be in
vogue, and brown velvet with red lines
is an example of the novelties among
these artistocratlc fabrics.
Cloths with a hairy surface are again
to be worn so rumor says. They are
smart for street wear, but they will
not succeed in supplanting the plain
satin-faced fabrics which are always
the handsome thing for dressy toilets.
The tailor gowns for early autumn,
the black and white hair stripe rough
wool material will be considered par
ticularly smart with a trimming of
bias bands of the material.
One of the marked features of au
tumn modes will be the popularity of
the lounge coat in preference to the
short jacket The coats of many of the
autumn costumes are long enough to
come more than half-way down the
skirt.
In the great conglomeration of styles
which can be noticed at the season's
close, a few features stand forth
prominently.
One of the most conspicuous gar
ments to be noticed is the lace Jacket,
and this must now be found in every
fashionable wardrobe, and, indeed, in
any wardrobe of any pretensions what
ever. Now, tdhave a lace jacket does
not mean a great deal, for lace Is cheap
and it is something that is easily
handled. Any woman can make her
self such a Jacket provided she have
the lace and in these days when this
delicate fabric can be obtained for up
wards of fifty cents a yard there is
little need of lamenting the lack of It
Miss Hay. who is to be married in a
short time, wears a very pretty lace
Jacket in white, lined with a dull crepe
de chine. The Jacket is in Italian lace,
made by hand, and of a pure white,
non-lustrous hue that Is almost a
mourning lace. Its lining Is dull crepe
and it is cut off above the belt and the
lining is box-pleated front and back,
while the outside is straight
A little band of black crepe de chine
outlines the neck or shoulder front and
back and on each side of the front
there are ribbon choux in bunches like
little rosettes, with dozens of hanging
ends about' one finger long.
As to hats, the return to favor of the
original form of toque with circular,
low blocked crown and brim turned up
straight all the way round and of the
same height as the crown is predicted.
It will be trimmed with ostrich feath
ers, wings, handsome couteaux, to any
of which the aigrette may be added.
The new broad-brimmed sailor, with
a very wide, low, flat crown, narrow
ing in at Its base, called the "Santos,"
will appear in felt

most sought-after effects of the mo

they lend their graceful forms and
lovely hues with artistic adaptability
to brooches and buckles. The blossom
itself frequently forms the centre, the

Some of the latest Jewelry from Paris
Is odd, almost queer In design. Among
the subjects sent out by the Parisian
designers are figures with an expres
sion of agony upon the faces (which
are nevertheless beautiful), writhing
amid flames that encircle them up to
the waist; or mermaids, whose limbs
descend into the translucent depths of
a mother-of-pearl sea. clasping drown
