The subject of this sketch Is an, at
torney at Grand Island. He was born
In Carroll county, Ohio, December 14,
1853. His parents removed to Fayette
county, Iowa, In 1864, and the son re
ceived his education in the common
schools. He continued his schooling at
Upper Iowa university and graduated
from the state university la"w depart
ment in 1877. He practiced law In part
nership with his brother. Judge John
R. Thompson, at Brush Creek, Iowa,
and came to Grand Island in 1881. He
was elected county attorney of Hall
county in 18S6, but did not stand as a
candidate for re-election.
In 1S90 he was democratic candidate
for congress in the Third district of
Nebraska with two other candidates
in the field, O. M. Kem, populist, and
G. W. E. Doisey, republican.
Mr. Thompson Is married and has an
Interesting family of three children.
He served as delegate at large to the
national democratic convention In 1S92,
1896 and 1900, and was democratic na
tional committeeman for the four years
ending in 1900. He served as mayor of
Grand Island from 1895 to 1899.
Mr. Thompson was nominated for
governor by both the late democratic
and populist state conventions at
Grand Island, a long deadlock resulting
in his acceptance as the logical candi
date of the fusion forces In the state.
Mr. Thompson stands well with bis
townsmen and In the state at large Is
one of the recognized leaders In the
allied fusion parties.
