At the home of the bride's parents,
Captain and Airs. L. M. Pratt, in Os
ceola, were married on Wednesday
Miss Alice Pratt and Mr. Roy J.
Slphcrd, an employe of Ganoung's
pharmacy In this city. Reverend W. J.
Scott, assisted by Reverend Knox
Boude performed the ceremony, using
the ring service of the Methodist Epls
copal church. More than two hundred
guests were present. Mr. and Mrs.
Slpherd are at present residing at 312
North Fourteenth street
The engagement of Miss Maude Ma
comber to Mr. Fred A. Cuscaden, both
of Omaha, has been announced. Both
are well known In university circles.
Miss Macomber Is a member of Delta
Gamma sorority and a member of the
class of '02 at the university. Mr.
Cuscaden Is a member of Phi Kappa
Psl. He was graduated a year or two
ago from the university, and is a mem
ber of the law class of '02. The mar
riage will occur June twenty-sixth.
Miss Spiirck was surprised at the
home of Miss Edna Perrin Saturday
afternoon by the second and third girls'
basket ball teams of the high school.
Those present were Misses Nettie
Mills, Maysel Van Andel, Anna Walt,
Wlnnelta Walt, Edna Perrin, Gertrude
Sharpe, Emma Swezey, Ruby Turner,
Gertrude Friend, Mattie Woodworth.
Mabel Hindmarsh, Vera Barger and
Leona Baker.
Miss Pauline Thompson gave a
garden party Saturday afternoon at
her home 2424 O street A Maypole
dance followed the crowning of the
queen o' the May. A short program
was given and light refreshments were
served. Guests were Superintendent
and Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Mary McKin
non, principal of the Elliott school, and
her teachers, and forty young ladles.
Miss Putnam Is the guest of Miss
Truax in Chicago.
Mrs. B. W. Toho entertained the E.
E. D. kensington this week,
Mrs. Milton Scott visited her son, Mr.
George Scott, in Hastings this week.
Mrs. C B. Rlghter gave a children's
party yesterday afternoon for her little
son Charles.
Miss Sallie Groh of Omaha spent a
few days of this week as the guest of
Miss Risser.
Mrs. C. H. Warner has returned
from Chicago, where she was the guest
of her sister.
Mrs. Slaughter and Mrs. Hawver or
Omaha were the guests this week of
Mrs. C. C. White.
Mr. and Mrs. Don L. Love have
moved into their new house on Eight
eenth and E streets.
Air. O. R. Kelley of Omaha, who has
been the guest of Mr. C. E. Matson,
left this morning for York.
Miss Smith and Miss Morrison will
give a kensington next Wednesday for
Miss Hamilton and Miss White.
Mrs. R. Halstead Ward, who was the
guest for a month of Mr. and Mrs. H.
B. Ward, left on Monday for her home
in the east -,
Miss Katherine Odell, who has been
the guest of Mrs. Mark Woods, left on
Wednesday for her home in Evans
ville, Indiana.
Mrs. J. E. Barker of Kansas City,
and Miss Nina Rlx of Hot Springs,
Arkansas, were guests last week of
Mrs. F. D. Cornell.
Miss Laura Houtz has returned from
an extended visit to Chicago and the
east Miss Clara Watklns joined Miss
W. E. UNLAND.

W. E. Unland, proprietor of one of the largest tailoring establishments
in the city, is a self-made man, having made his own living since he
was fourteen years of age. He was born in Henderson, Minnesota, July
2., 1865. In 1873 he came to Nebraska and ten years later settled In Lin
coln. He was first a clerk in the establishment of John L. McConnell. Next
he was employed with the wholesale and retail firm of George M. Traver.
He also worked with several other leading men? receiving In all a first
class commercial education.
Mr. Unland was for four years deputy county treasurer under Messrs.
Burnham and Maxey Cobb.
After leaving the treasurer's office he engaged in the tailoring busi
ness, and three years ago located at the corner of Eleventh and O
streets. Here he has built up one of the most prosperous trades in
clothing specialties in the city.
Houtz in Chicago and together they
visited friends in Illinois.
Doctor and Mrs. Joseph Scroggs are
absent on their vacation. They will
visit Salt Lake City and other places
of interest in that region.
Mrs. C. C. White announces the en
gagement of her daughter Jessie C, to
Mr. Frederick B. Ryons. The marriage
will be celebrated in June.
Mrs. W. F. Kelley gave a kensington
yesterday and another today In honor
of her cousin, Miss Beckwith of Mt.
Pleasant, Iowa. Miss Jessie Lansing
sang on each occasion and Miss Beck-
