THE COURIER On Tuesday evening State Superin tendent and Mrs. W. K. Fowler enter tained ten of the sixteen young women who occupy the position of county su perintendent In Nebraska. In addition to tliis list were Dr. " A. Clark of Peru, and Mr. G. L. Towne of the "Ne braska Teacher." A seven course din ner was served, and much amusement was furnished ly the unique menu cards on which the names of the viands were represented by quotations. The cover was ornamental -with a picture of a model district school house. On Thursday evening Mr. and Mrs. Fowler gave a second dinner party to the teachers of the Blair schools, and a few other guests, among whom were five county superintendents who were unable to be present on Tuesday. They were Mrs. Mary Parker of Sheridan county. Miss Alice Wilkinson of Kim ball county, Miss Etta Brown of Cherry county, Miss lizzie Marker of Webster county, and Miss Estella M. Daniels of Brown county. The other guests out side of Blair were Miss Ada S. Hicks and Miss Ethel Adkins of Fremont, Miss Mamie Forman and Miss Mary E. Fowler, of North Bend. On this occasion the menu cards contained a beautiful half tone picture of the new high school building at Blair. The table decora tions were of red carnations and sml- lax. v ? .- A watch night party was given at the home of Herbert McCulloch. 0324 J street, in honor of the Xenodecha club of East Lincoln. A very enjoyable eve ning was spent. Games were the main feature of the evening. About mid night all -were seated at two long tables and served with oysters and then with candies and nuts. Souvenirs were afterwards distribut ed and all enjoyed a recitation of re markable merit given by Miss Octavia of Nebraska City. The party disband ed about 2 o'clock. Those present were Misses Florence Westcott. Eva Axtell, Eva Sherdeman. Carrie Case, Carrie Scott, Nora Hodg man, Edythe Hodgman. Otcavia Bur nett, Inez Crowe, Edythe Shepherd. Hutton, Earl Pond, ZImmerer. -'i '"1 -H The eleventh annual New Year's party given by Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Saw yer on Tuesday evening attracted one hundred and fifty guests to the beauti ful home at Seventeenth and F. A musical program of great variety fur nished the entertainment. Among the most artistic numbers were the zither solos by Mr. Miller and the songs which were beautifully rendered by Miss Ser renburg. Mrs. Sawyer's guest. Other numbers worthy of special mention were solos by Mrs. Albert "Watkins. Mr. Tuttle and Mr. Wurzburg. and a selection by a quartet. A poem by Mr. A. L. Blxby was followed by appropri ate quotations on the subject of mus ic. Befreshments consisting of coffee, doughnuts, cakes and ices were served. The very pleasant gathering ended with the Virginia reel. Among the guests were Judge and Mrs. Munscr of Omaha and Miss Morton of Nebras ka City. j j .? - i." r A very pleasant social meeting of the Nebraska branch of the association of collegiate alumnae was held Thurs day afternoon at the home of Mrs. A. W". Field. A large number of out-of-town members were present, anil the renewal of friendships and inspiring social intercourse which are the great est advantages of such an organization took the place of a formal literary pro gram. Several musical numbers of great excellence were rendered under the direction of Mrs. John Doane. A vocal solo by Professor Beynolds was greatly enjoyed by the guests, as was the duet by Mrs. Doane and Miss Ab bott. The chorus work of the Euter pean glee club also was most credit able. Ices were served at the close of the musical program. Perhaps the most enjoyable social event during the teachers' association meeting was the reception at the Lin coln on Thursday evening tendered by members of the Normal faculty to the former students. It was purely inform al, and was largely attended, as few Nebraska teachers have not at some time or other had an Intimate connec tion with the teacher factory at Peru. Miss Ellen Uooney of Omaha is the guest of Mrs. J. M. Crewltt. Lea Bohemlennes met on Thursday witli Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald. Miss Helen Bllsh, of Omaha, Is the guest of Miss Maud Harpham. Mrs. E. A. Compton returned on Tuesday from a visit at Curtis. Mr. Paul Plzey of Omaha spent part of the week with Lincoln friends. Miss Edna Harpham spent New Year's day with friends at Ashland. A number of relatives were enter tained at dinner by Mrs. Walter Davis on New Year's day. i MARTIN BCSHNELL AND WIFE, of Ashland, Parents of Postmaster H. M. Hushnell, of Lincoln. The son gave a reception at his home in honor of the father and mother on New Year's day. About fifty lads and lassies in fancy costumes were entertained by Profes sor and Mrs. Elmer L. Richeson at 1132 N street last Saturday evening. Dancing was indulged in from eight till nine-thirty o'clock. A very pretty plantation dance was given by Misses Bessie Howard, Polly Berkson and LIda Seeley. Miss Mary Eames danced the Highland fling, and for an encore gave the Suwanee River jig. Miss Gertrude Rehlaender carried off the first prize, a two-pound box of candy, for the most unique costume. She was dressed in a knight's cos tume, all In black. Master John BeacTi ley represented a brownie, capturing the second prize, also a box of candy. 24 54 - fr ir tSr Mrs. G. W. Rhodes entertained eight friends of her little daughter Kather ine last Saturday afternoon. Tracing the lines of a cobweb furnished the en tertainment during the first part of the afternoon. A dainty four-course supper was served on a table decorated with flowers and ferns, after which guessing games were indulged in, the prize being won by Miss Helen Mitch ell. ..- v ?,.- Miss Meyers, private secretary to Governor Savage, has returned from Chicago, where she spent Christmas. Judge David Ryan, who visited Lin coln relatives this week, returned to his home In Des Moines on Wednesday. Mrs. John B. Wright is entertaining her mother, Mrs. Robinson, of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Riley of Kan sas City are the guests of Lincoln rela tives. Miss Stoner of the Peru Normal faculty was a Lincoln visitor this week. Mrs. Archie Hershey, of Sioux City, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. E. Finney. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Starrett of Shel don, la., are the guests of Miss Miriam Starrett. ftf Miss I. II. Davis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Is the guest this week of Miss Webster. Mrs. C. C. Miss Mary McGahey entertained a number of friends at a kensington on Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday Miss Edna Guild gave a one o'clock luncheon at which the guests were Miss Lumery, Miss Auld, Miss Poynter, Miss Roberts and Miss Marsland. Mr. A. S. Pearse of Omaha was the guest of Mr. J. W. Deweese and family on New Year's day. . Miss Flora Bullock will return to Ne braska City today, after spending her vacation In this city. Miss Helen Itergvr gave a luncheon and box party at the matinee to twelve of her little friends on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. C. A. Keith and daughter. Winger returned Tues day from Muncle, Indiana, where she was called two weeks ago by the death of her mother.
