    THE COURIER.
I superintendent of the industrial school
at Koarnoy. He is a very well known
and active politician. Mr. and Mrs.
Mallalieu's weddiog tour will be an in
spection of tho different reformatory in
stitutions of Iowa. They return to
Kearnoy about February first.
Last evening Judge and Mr&. Field
gave an "Author's Carnival," it being a
series of thirty-six questions each to be
answered by the name of an author.
On the first page of the leaflet was the
following introduction:
Some authors thought in chilly weather
To hold a. carnival together ;
And I let it not provoke a smile)
Co operation was their style .
The mingled elements were good ;
The preparations understood ;
The work effected with great care ,
The banquet was a grand affair.
By notables the board was graced .
And all was in most perfect taste ;
The names of guests I will not tell
As I'm sure you know them very well .

After the carnival a luncheon was

Pi Beta Phi gave a kensington Satur
day at tho chapter house. The guests

A hotel banquet was given last Satur
day niB'ht at the Lincoln to the football
: team by the athletic board, the old and
I new managers and the coach. Professor
Caldwell was toastmaster and Rov.
iManss, Messrs. Westover, Tukey and
IWyler responded to toasts. The other
ruests were Professor Richards, Profes
sor Emerson, Coach Booth, Melford.
captain of the '93 team, manager elect
Cowgill, Hewitt. Loadwith, Librarian
Wyer and Westover of tho athletic
board and the following players: Worel,
Eager, Cook, McKillip, Ryan, Johnson,
Bender, Daaenbrock, Koehler, Crandall,
Vosb, Ringer, Cortelyou, Raymond, Nol
son, Drain and Best. Four members of
the team were absent, Captain Brow,
Pillsbury, Montgomery and Simmons.
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Morrison and
Miss Barr entertained the Kishmet club
last evening at the home of the latter.
A two course luncheon was served after
the games. The drawing room was dec
orated with red roses, the hall, library
and dining room with pink.
Mrs. S E. Cosford gave a kensingtoD
yesterday for the ladies of tho G. T. C.
C. Those present were MesdameE, An
derson, Shepherd, Smith, Church, Dye,
Lloyd and Scott.
Mrs. F. W. Bartruff entertained tho
New Book review club on Wednesday.
Mrs. Kelley reviewed David Corson and
Mr p. Stonebraker gave a sketch of tho
author's life. Toasts on Queen Vic
toria's life were responded to over the
teacups.
Dr. and Mrs. W. F. Hill gave a din
ner Tuesday evening to Mr. and Mrs. G
W. Tibbetts of Hastings, Judge and
Mrs. A. S. Tibbetts, Misses Anna Tib
betts and Nora Miller.
Delta Upsilon gave an informal dance
Friday evening. Mrs. C. W. Chambers
chaperoned Misses Ilazlett, Harper,
Henry, Howland, McIIenry, Montgom
ery, Parks, Polk, Trickey and Miller;
Messrs. Clinton, Huff, Chambers, E!
iott, Benedict, Wilson, Bliss, Statep,
Strabr, Kanzier, Brookings and Lester.
The Tuesday Night club gave its reg
ular fortnightly dance at Courier hall.
Those present were Misses Richards,
Garten, Clara Hammond, Nance, Thorpe,
Henry, Woodward, Agnew, Gahan,
Thomas, Chapin, Haggard, Bonnell;
Messrs. Anderson, Ricketts, Ames Mar
lay, Schick, Turpin, Cartwill, Raymond,
Drain, Brown, McCreery, Orr, And
rews. Mr. and Mrs. George H. Clark gave a
brilliant dinner party Tuesday evening
in honor of Major and Mrs F. J. W.
Stoney and Mrs. Charles FosEelu.an.
Covers were laid for thirty. The deco
rations were in red roses and red carna
tions. The menu was served in cine
courses. After tho banquet Mrs. George
E Sbipman of Chicago sang with per
fect shading a group of songs.
Mr. Bignell has the sympathy of tho
very large number of his friends in
Lincoln on account of the serious illness
of his mother in Denver, wheio he has
been detained by her illness.
A party of young ladies spent last eve
ning pleasantly at a masquerade given
at the home of Miss Grace Edmiston.
The decorations were pink and white,
carnations being the chosen flower.
Light refreshments were served. Fol
lowing were present: Misses Ruth Has
kell, Minnie Morrill. Nellie Ingalls, Fay
Anderson, Minnie Hart, Lulu Fullerton,
Ada Cook, Katbarino Bixby, Mary Hig
gins, Grace Poarell, Cora McGrew, Lena
Jeary, Grace Edmiston and Master
Wardner Ssott.
Mr. and Mrs. M. Friend gave a card
party last evening. Forty-five persons
were present and six handed euchre was
played. White carnations, palms and
ferns were used for decorating. A
lnncheon was served after the games.

Mrs. Frank Lahr will give a kensing
ton on Friday, February 1st, and a card
party on the 2nd.
