GOLF NOTES.
Mr. Frank W. Parks has been secured
as instructor for the fall season. Mr.
Parks is a professional who is well
known in the east and in the larger
western cities.
It is Badly deplored that the majority
of players in this city play the game in
complete defiance of golf etiquette. The
following two rules are continually be
ing violated: "1. No player should play
from a tee until the party in front of
him has played his second stroke or is
out of range.'' "2. No player should
play to a putting-green until the players
ahead have holes out" The observance
of these rules, especially of the first one;
will prevent serious accidents. Another
rule often broken is the one in regard
to soling the club in a hazard. This is
only allowable in a grass hazard, but
in roads, sand bunkers, etc., it is in
direct violation of the aforesaid rule,
the penalty in match-play -being the
hole.
In the tournament on last Saturday
afternoon, Captain McCreery's side was
again victorious by a score of two.
Foity-Beren is the lowest score that
has been made by the local players on
these links, several of the men having
attained thht record. None of the wo
men players have scored under seventy.
The club is in a flourishing condition,
having now over eighty members, and
applications for membership are coming
in every week.

The Chase-Lister Theatre company
will open a week's engagement at the
Funke Opera House beginning Monday
evening, October 8tb, presenting the
following plays during the week: La
Belle, Marie, The Smugglers, Mother
and Son, Mystic Mountain, Young Mrs.
Winthrup, Black Flag, and Pearl of
Savoy. The company contains fourteen
membeas besides some specialty artists.
Monday evening two ladies or one lidy

THE ART OP DOING NOTHING
Marietta pushed her smeary buttered
Third Leader as far from her as she
could. The Patient Little Girl in
front of her felt the force of Marietta's
repugnance in the upper half of her
spinal column. The book was not
Marietta's very own. She was a clean
child. It was a dispensation under the
Free Text-book Law. I he smears and
tears were the marks of those who had

er grade, through much tribulation,
Marietta surveyed the book with evi
dent disgust In fact she stuck out her
tongue. Satisfied with this complete
expression, she spread her very full
gingham skirt way out on either side,
making a beautiful fan. Placing one
fat band in each extremity of this crea
tion, she put her dimpled chin on the
edge of her desk and looked at the
teacher. The teacher was not looking
at her. She rested bo for a moment,
while the light of a new idea dawned in
her eyes. Suddenly she sat bolt up
right, grasped the desk firmly with both
hands, and shook her head from side to
side, bo violently, that her short flaxen
braids stood straight out. The boy
across the aisle giggled.
'Marietta Jones!" It was the voice
of the teacher. Also, in this case the
voice of duty.
Jasper now did you spend your holi
days? Jumpupp Oh, I have been very busy.
I had to do all the things about the house
that my wife did not like to ask the
servants to do.
