STEEL FORKS IN THE WHITE
HOUSE.
. . THE OLIVER.
Hoyt's "A Day acd a Night" is a com
ing theatrical offering. The story tells
of a young man from the country who,
in an orthodox atmosphere, little reali
zes the vastness of the world, and its
ins and outs, until he comes to New
York to engage a choir for his church.
His father, who wants ta see if his son
has any sporting blood in him, intro
duces to bim an old friend, a theatrical
manager, who promises to help him.
The son is presented to a lot of choruB
girls who claim they are concert singers.
Among them is his sweetheart, who
was formerly an actress, but here dis
owns all knowledge of bim, but as he is
very bashful, agrees to teach him how
to make lore. The young man finds the
gay life of the theatre much to his lik
ing, and is not slow in throwing off his
orihodox habits.
At the Oliver, September 13th.
A season of laughter is to be inagurat
ed at the Oliver on Friday evening,
September 14th, when the only Eddie
Foy in his supporting company will be
seen in a roaring comedy entitled "A
Night in Town." The piece is an as
sured euccess as it has already been
given by an English company in Lon
don under the title of "In Town" and
additional element of strength is the
appearance of Eddie Foy at the head of
the cast, as there is no comedian upon
the Amcricah stage that can draw from
an audience more boisterous laughter
than this well known son of Chicago.
Who that has ever seea Foy can for
get his unctuous humor and his infec
tious laugh. His smile is like a sun
beam and brightens all around. Judg
ing by the names in the cast his support
is an excellent one and an evening of
hilarious amusement is in store for
theatre goers who go to see "A Night in
Town."-
President Jackson Supplied These for His
Guests at Table.
WritiDg of "One Hundred Years in
the White House," and recalling some
of the notabln entertainments given by
our Chief Executives, Rene Bacbe, in
tho September Ladies' Home Journal,
says that "President Madison revived
much of the formal ceremony which
Thomas Jefferson had discarded, and
under his administration great atten
tion was given to the state banquets, no
expense being spared in making them as
fine as possible. President Jackson dis
liked ceremony even more than did
Preeidont Jefferson, and, preferring a
steel fork himself, he always provided
guests with one silver fork and onn of
steel. After dinner he smoked a long
stemmed corncob pipe. He wished to
throw the doors of the White House
vide open to the public, but this idea
he was forced to relinquifh after the
experience of one occasion on which he
extended an ill-junged hospitality to
all comers. The carpet in the East
Room was ruined by punch which the
mob spilt in its eagerness to get at the
buckets containing the beverage; the
gowns of many ladies were spoiled and
the furniture was broken. At his fare
well reception President Jackson intro
duced a curiouB novelty in the shape of
a gigantic cheese, which was cut into
pieces and distributed among
guests.''

THE AMERICAN INVASION OF
LONDON.
The suggestion in your issue of today
for providing volunteer guides for our
American, colonial and country cousins
on their visits to London strikes me as
an admirable one. How often do we
see our visitors gazing aimlessly about
the streets, jostled by the crowds or
standing apart at street corners trying
in vain to tind out in "Baedeker" what
they want. Surely there are many
Londoners of both sexes possessed of a
competent knowledge of the chief
churches, museums and objects of in
t9rest (or who could soon obtain such
knowledge) who would be glad to de
vote a day or half a day now and again
during the holiday season to escorting
about London small parties say of eight
or ten.
Letter in London Chronicle.
When the Abb first saw his cousin the
Zebra he exclaimed: "It is the first
time that there has ever been any ec
centricity in our family!"
1 know but one Singe'r who cannot be
persuaded to give an encore, and that is
a Dying Swan.
There is a place for everything. I do
not advise thee to hang up thy hat on
the horn of a rhinoceros.
A certain grain of Millet fell out of a
sack in which it was being carried into
a city and was trampled in the dust.
"Alas!' cried the Millet-seed, "I am
lost! Yet do I not repine for myself,
but for those countless multitudes who
lacking me will now inevitably
perish of starvation!"
"After all it's pleasant to be at home
again!'' said Eagle's feathers on the
head of the arrow that pierced him.
But the Eagle made no reply.
"I may be partial," said the Rocket
stick after he had descended, "but I
don't see a single constellation up there
that could hold a candle to mine."
"She really sang quite nicely," re
marked the Cuckoo, after she had been
to hear the Nightingale one evening,
"but I found her just a little monoton
ous. "My dears." said the Converted Can
nibal reverently to his wife and family
as tnty sat aown tne tneir oaKea mis
