The news that comes from cliff and pebbly beach of Lincoln wanderers, has awakened this week in those left behind only the feeling that California weather, like other things, comes round to those who wait. A letter from Mrs. Joseph A. Sargent, of Havana, Cuba, describes the recep tion given in El Vedado suburb by Mrs. Leland, wife of the Methodist mission ary in Havana, to Mr. and Mrs. Sargent shortly after their marriage in Cuba. Both bride and groom are well known University of Nebraska students, whose friends will be glad to hear of the royal welcome that has been given them. About forty American residents attend ed the reception, most of thetn being government officials with their wives. There were, however, several native Cubans, who looked their congratula tions, being unable to pronounce the President's English. The rooms of Mr. and Mrs. Leland, which are chiefly windows, reaching to tiled floors, were heavy with the fragrance of Cuban roses which fill the Vedado patio of the missionary's home. Among many other greetings that have come to the young engineer and his bride, was a message from Mr. Sargent's corps of assistants in tne Department of Surveys. The expression of good wishes was accompa nied by a handsome silver tea and cho colate service. This tribute from his men is scarcely less valued by the Ne braska ex-yolunteer than were the words of recognition that came from Governor-General Wood, commending Mr. Sargent's strenuous labors in the survey of fortifications recently finished- Mr. Sargent is one of the men whose work is giving westerners a noble pride in the bone End sinew bred on the prairie. On Tuesday at high noon occurred the marriage of Mr. W. E. Allen, as sistant physical director at the Ne braska University, and Miss Grace M. Wheeler, youngest daughter of Judge and Mrs. Robert Wheeler. The wed ding service at the home of the bride's parents, 2545 Q street, was a very quiet ooe, only immediate relatives witness ing the ceremony .The Rev. Dr. Long of ficiated. Both bride and groom are University graduates, and enthusiastic students of athletics, Mr. Allen having directed work in Physical training in live colleges or academies, while Miss Wheeler's record as a member of the U. of N. Midget Basket Ball team is note worthy. Mr. Allen was graduated in "95 from the Y. M. C. A. training school of Springfield, Massachusetts, where he remained as instructor in physical cul ture for one year after which he spent a second year in the same department at Lowell, Massachusetts. Graduating in the class of '98 from Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana, where for two jears he had directed the work in athletic training, as coach for the Earlham team, ne wont in 99 to San Antonio, Texas, again acting as Y. M. C. A. Physical Director. The year of '99-1900 Mr. Allen spent at the Nebraska State Uni versity, preparing for tho Master's de gree, and assisting Doctor Hastings in the work of the University gymnasium. His record is one that promises well for the new work to which he has been elected at Spokane Falls. The bride is a most vivacious and popular member of the class of 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Allen leave today for Long Beach, Cali fornia, where the groom's father is in real estate business, renting many sum mer cottages to tourists at this season. About the first of S9ptember, they will go to Spokane Falls, Washington, which will be their home, Mr. Allen having been elected instructor in science in the high school of that city. Mr. and Mrs. George B. Harris of Chicago and once of Lincoln are enjoy ing.a vacation on the Isles of Shoals off Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The other day Mr. HarriB and Mr. Sam Parker of Chicago, formerly landlord of the Grand Pacific hotel, were fishing in a small boat, two and a half miles off the island. Suddenly they heard a spouting and a blowing, and, looking up, they saw a whale about 250 feet away. It was seventy-five fent long and so big that it could have given Jonah first-class accommodations and had enough room left for a hoard of lesser sinners, He rolled around on top of the water very gracefully and finally, after seeing the three men in the boat, disappeared. The skipper, Charley Rob irson, said that whales were harmless unless attacked, when they became very dangerous, even to a much larger craft than the one Mr. Harris and his friends were in.
