X THE C0UTl3rt. 11 y v i- pleaEe, it will afford you consolation And hence no occasion will there be for dispute. "On the 15th day of June 1856, forty, four years ago day after tomorrow, John D. Prey and his eon, John W., landed at or near the Bait basin, and were the first that came with the purpose of mak ing this their permanent home. Im mediately came the Dee family, and in a short time the new settlement con tained a goodly number, among them the names of, Keys, Gregory, Cadman, the Loders, Retzlaff, Wollingford Doni van, Moraan, Queen, and so I might go on, names all familiar to you, with the blue blood ot the pioneer, that came in the Mayflower, coursing in their veins; they came for a purpose, not alone to satisfy any personal ambition but to build for posterity that which we enjoy today. Those were days ot great hard ship, their privations were extreme; it was a time when men's souls were tried with equal severity to those their fath ers endured in establishing the New Republic. When you remember Cap tain Donivan, Gregory, Warnes, Wal lingford, Loder and Wood, perhaps one or two others, it seems to me now there were eight in number, mounted on their jaded horses, armed with rifles, patroled the bleak and lonesome prairies to pro tect the settlers from the marauding movements of the bloodthirsty Sioux, now dealing with the mischiveious Cheyennes, then treating with the troublesome Arapahoes, all with a cour age and determination of purpose that must convince you that they were of the came stock, were selected for the same purpose, as was Staodish, Winslow and others who came on the same mis sion over a century before them. "It was not alone, however, in the men that the work was to be performed, but they were strengthened, encourag ed and sustained by the noble women that came with them and endured the awful privations uncomplainingly, and with that degree of fortitude that is again convincing that they were chosen because of that peculiar and perfect fitness for the mission that brought them, and when Mrs. Prey was rescuing little Rebecca, single handed and alone from the marauding band ot Cheyennes and Arapahoes on that bright, spring day as she played among the wild flower?, but a little ways from where we now stand, wreathing garlands in childish glee, it serves only to illustrate the character and determination of all the women that endured those dangers, privations, distress and sorrow that we might some day be possessed ot the blessings and comforts that we now en joy. "I wish that the time permitted a careful and more extended review of their lives, of their deeds, of their character, and that I might contribute to their memory the honor that is their due. Jacob Dawson, Elder Young, Doctor McKesson, T. S. Schamp, John Giles, Jonathan Ball, Luke Lavender, Thomas Hudson. And so I might go on, repeating familiar and honored names. Everyone of them, together with their noble, loving and faithful helpmates, earned the reward ot their master for the faithful performance ot their duties he gave them in charge to do, and the loving memory ot a grateful people that have profited by their lives, sacrificed upon the alter of human pro giees. "There can be no mistake therefore, when I urge that they came for the great purpose that I have outlined thus briefly in this paper. Pioneers, upon whom we tocToften look as an adven turous class, drifting upon the tide of humanity, without ruddbr or compas, such were not the ones whose memory we honor today, and find pleasure in relating the reminences of their past, which certainly will, as the years go by, (j5ffiffiffiffiffi$ffiiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffilm!ffi$ THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA SCHOOL OF MUSIG would call the attention of all who desire a musical education to the unequalled facilities offered at this school. XTTII,AXX KJMlBAIr,, Director. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS5 grow sweeter, by a better appreciation by thoBe that are yet to come, of what they did for humanity's sake. The vital principles of constitutional exis tence will then be better understood, which they bo boldly enunciated, and promptly endorsed. It is for time to batter impress upon the understanding of men the importance of the duty and the obligation to perform it, as declared by them, when they commenced the or ganization of this colony. Their words will go ringing down to prosperity, as the guide to the future conduct of men. "Let us perpetuate the blessings con ferred upon us, so that the soverign citizen of any state, looking to the steady and harmonious progress of our young territory, and its manly defense of the interests of this republic may ap ply to us, and with as profound emo tion, the enconium bestowed by an il lustrious general upon bis victorious comrades, after a hard fought battle. We have been baptized in fire and blood and we have come out Steele. "Let us heed then the lesson that this celebration teaches. Let us be alert to the progressive ideas that the age advances, and make noble and grand the inheritance that these, our fathers, have left. "For humanity sweeps onward ; Where today the artyr stands , On the morrow crouches Judas , with the silver in his hand ; Far in front, the cross stands ready, and the crackling Fagots burn . While the hooting mob of yesterday , in silence all, Return . To glean up the scattered ashes , . into history's- golden urn ." "New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncoucth ; They must upward still, and onward, Who would keep abreast of truth ; So before us gleamed her campfires; We ourselves must pilgrims be, Launch our Mayflower, and steer boldly - Through the desperate winter sea , Nor attempt the future's portal with the past's blood rusted key."
