In observing the decline and fall of a great singer a gruesome tf.sk to one who has been an enthusiast of yore it must be remembered that singing must be considered from at least three points of view. First there s the physiological side. Did the singer use her voice in such a manner as to give an effect of ease and beauty of tone dependent upon correct bodily action, or didjshe produce a tone rough and forced by unnatural abuse of the mus cles of the throat? Second the techni cal Bide. Did the singer display fluency of execution and facility in the pro duction of trills, scales, turns and other ornament!- Third there is also the ar tisticside. Did the singer possess the intelligence and temperament necessary to give to the audience the thrill which compels enthusiasm, and without which theaaoet tiakhed technique and utmost 'beauty of tone are -but sounding brass anda tinkling cymbal? Of course the ability to hypnotize an audience by the charm of beauty or that mysterious power we call personal magnetism is a large factor besides the qualities enum erated. Moreover a great, singer mutt poavjafl a'great voice. Madame Scalchi wsb once a great singer7 1 shall never forget the fir6t time I heard her was it in 1883 or 1884? declaim the first recitative of ''Areace" inRoaaisis "Semiramide." Of course I was TosBg and enthusiastic at that time, bat the splendor of tone and vitality of impersonation and wealth of ail the things which makes a great art ist I might waste superlative? in de scribing them and still give no idea to the younger generation. Ebeu fugaces! "King Pandion, he is dead. All his bona an iapt in lead." Madame Scalchi has never possessed a good tone production. Her splendid vitality and powerful physique enabled her to atuee one of the most glorious voices in the world with comparative impunity But that time is past and only a fray ed remmant of that organ which used to give the thrill in the old days is left to sadden those who heard her years ago. Moreover her technique, which at one time was capable of dazzling trills, and of fiorituri which would put a light soprano to envy wsb at this concert not in evidence. Madame Scalchi sang with care and evident effort it seemed almost with pains. What is left? Only the artistic fervor, the intelligence, the repose which marks the great 6inger. She still domi nates the stage by the power of a great personality everything else is gone. The assisting artists were moderately good, although the pianist seemed to belong to the period of Thalberg rather than that of Liszt The soprano, Ma dame de Pasquali is a routine singer of considerable flexibility. The tenor was hoarse but gave indications of correct methods and some finish in interpreta tion. The baritone, Mr. Franceschetti sang with Italian fluency and robust ness of tone.
