by u Ltieds concern, who hnvc made a
preBH that bxerta a pressuro of 700 tons,
and can mako lonr and Blow strokes
or shorthand quick ones, as desired; a
larjje steam cylinder Is up-d InstvAd of
a pumping engine, the piston of-whloh
Is prolonged and acts as a ram for ex
fcrtlng hydraulic prcBsure on the forging
tools through the medium of a second
hydraulic cylinder. Brie , there art
two Hteam cylinders placed over tho
press to Mft the forging crosHhead, by
which t, upper forging tool Is carried,
and, wr it Is desired to work In tho
ordinary Way with heavy pressure, tho
admission and exhaust of steam In
these lifting cylinders Is controlled by
the same lever which regulates tho ad
mission and the exhausting of tho
steam In the large driving cylinder; but
for quick working, direct and uninter
rupted communication is ctabllnhed by
means qf a separate cock between these
lifting cylinders and the boiler. In this
way there Is then always the full boiler
. pressure beneath the cylinder, tend
ing to keep the croBshepd and upper
tool at the top of the 8'ioke, but the
main steam cylinder, which puts on
the forging pressure through the hy
draulic mechanism Is of so much
greater area than the combined a.ea
of the two small cylinders that the
crosshead Is pressed down with con
siderable" force, although, of ..course,
with less force than if the two lifting
cylinders were exhauating In the usual
way.
