tlon for the magnificent stand of the
Dutch farmers against such overwhelm1
ing odds. A race that can show such
qualities as the Boors have exhibited
in the last three months ought not to
be exterminated. Ita hardy stock is
needed in the work of developing the
Dark Continent. We all know wtll
that the English in thocoureo of a fow
more week or months nan hammer
and blunder their way through to
Pretoria, for the simple reason that they
have money, bhipp, and guns without
limit. They can, if need bo, transport a
million fighting men to Natal and Cape
Colony, while the wholo Boer nation is
already in the field, so far as the two
republics are concerned, and the pros
pect of assistance from any outside
quarter is too remote to be seriously
considered. The war against the
American colonies was a shameful
thing for England, and about the only
Englishmen who have come out of it
decently on the page of hiBtoiy aro the
Cbathams, Foxes and Burkes, who saw
the truth and spoke it with courage,
England lost in that war, and her
Burgoynes, Howes and Cornwallisses
won no glory for themselves or their
country. England will win in the
present war, but it will bo Command
antB Joubert, Cronje, and the other
Boer leaders who will come out with
military renown, rather than the Butlers,
Methuens, Gatacrep, or Whites. And
there are Boer (statesmen, too.- From
