THE COURIER. - A QUEEK EXPERIMENT. Flioti;r.i)hliiK tint Hpluili of it Drop ( Atnrcury. 1'rof. Worthlngton has been studying a curious phenomenon for twenty jcars says Knowledge. The splash of a drop occurs In the twinkling of an eye yet It 1b an exquisitely regulated phenomenon and one that very happily Illustrates some of the fundamental properties of the fluid. The problem that Prof. Worthlngton has succeeded In solving 1b to let u drop of deflnlto fcizo fall from a Hjcnd h.'lght in cui..t,ar atlvo darkness onto a surface and to II lumlnntc It by a Hash of exceedingly short duration at any desired stage, so as to exclude till the stages previous and subsequent to those thus selected. The many illustrations in this volume testify to the accuracy and beauty of his work. The curious results of a splash of a drop of mercury from a height of three inches upon a smooth glass plate are particularly interesting. Very soon after the first moment of im pact minute rays are shot out in all di rections on the surface with marvelous regularity. From the ends of the rays droplets of 1 -uld split off. The liquid subsides in t te mlddlo artl soon after ward flows into a ring. The ring then divides in such a manner us to join up the rays in pairs. Thereafter the whole contracts till the liquid rises in the center, so as to form the beginning of the rebound of the drop from tho plate. Immediately the drops at tho central mass rises in a column, which Just falls, itself to break Into drops. He photographed no fewer than thirty 6iiccesslvo stages of tho splash within tho twentieth of a second, so that tho average interval between them was about tho six-hundredth of a second. Remarkable are the splashes of water drops falling about sixteen inches into milk, but more beautiful are the domn forms when tho height Is fifty-two inches. Tho Colored Tuskegeo Woman's club spent an evening with "Mr. Rudyard Kipling." As tho roll was culled, each motubor responded with an appropriate quotation. From the Boomtown Boomerang: The musical and literary evening given by the Sagevlllo orchestra, with lady soloists, in the hall over Bud Hickey's saloon last eve, may well be called a howl'"': success, each number being greeted with loud howls for more from the audience. It Is many a day since we have heard so much music ripped out of a fiddle as Prof. Orlando P. C. Pugeley ripped out of his fiddle last night, and his accomplished and good looking lady wife pounded some of tho sweetest melody out of the piano that we ever heard pounded out of any piano. She Just made it get up and hump, and in the duet for two pcrsonn that they played together It was nip and tuck when it came to jerking the sweetest music out o' the two instru ments. Such dash, smash, crash, bang music ain't heard every day in these parts. Then there wasn't anything slow about tho accordion and flute duet by the professor's two daughters. Every foot in the house was keeping time be fore the young ladies bad played three minutes and some of tho limber-legged young folks even got up and waltzed jp and down the aisles. But when the whole orchestra of nine pieces got in its work the audience went wild, and If anyone thinks Boomtown ain't cul tivated up to appreciating good music .hey'd jjst ought to have been in Hick ;y's hall last night when that orchestra Jerked out "Sally and tho Ham-Fat Mm." Malk about your Boston Sym phony ' theotraa and Boston being tho musical center of tho country; Ts all ooppycock! There's as much musica .asto to the square inch here in Boom .own as in any town In America, and A'o'll engage to lick the man who says It ain't so. And when it comes to rocal singing, Miss Sadie May Yawp, jvho sang "The Gypsy's Warning" last aight, knocked the socks clean off a ivoman named Nordica wo heard sins jack cast last winter. It ain't often a bang-up concert company strikes rloomtown, but it gets appreciated jvhen it does come. m PICT W,.Ki Personally Conducted ICxcur sions to Weekly to B Cycle Photographs Athletic Photographs holographs of Babies Photographs of Groups J Exterior Views THE PHOTOGRAPHER m m 129 South Eleventh Street.
