In the selection ot his company Mr.
Murphy has shown great care, with the
result that he is supported by an organ
ization much above the average. Prom
inent among the members of the com
pany is Miss Dorothy Sherrod, a charm
ing young actress, who is seen in tho
role of a tniea from Chicago, and viBit
ug hor father, the carpet-bagging gov
ernor, during her school vacation. She
wears soma dreesoB that will have much
interest for the young ladies of the pres
ent day, inasmuch as they are exact
counterparts of the gowns that were
worn by the young ladies of that period
juBt after the close of tho civil war.
The action of "The Carpetbagger," as
the name indicates, Jb laid in the recon
struction period following the Civil War
and the scene is in iJacRson, Miss.
The big Holden Company, the most
extensive popular priced organization
on the road, will open a week's engage
ment at the Funko opera bouse on next
Monday night January 0th, in the
beautiful drama, "Escaped from the
Law." LadieBwill be admitted under
the usual conditions. In "Escaped from
the Law," there is so much of human
nature, the charactera are drawn with
such photographic yet artietic likeness;
the situations arise bo naturally, y. t are
full of power, and the construction is bo
skilful), that all in all, it possesses in the
most eminent degree those indispensable
characteristics ot a great and enduring
buccobb. The dialogue is bright and
sparkling end the situations are excur
ciatingly funny. Fow plays possess so
many of the elements of popularity as,
"Escaped from the Law," The play is
sundwitched with many bright and
pleasing specialties, which are worth
the small price ot admission. All the
plays presented here next week are
either owned or controlled exclusively
by the Holden Company, and wo are
promised no old worn out pieces. Ladies
should be sure and havo their seats re
served early in advance as this famous
company is sure to pack the house on
Monday night.
