South winds threw the warm rain against the win dows and the sound of blowing trees filled the sky from "horizon to horizon. I was writing at my table when in came my friend Virginia. She came no farther than the thres hold. There she stood and laughed, her bright hair blown across her fore head, her small face up raised, and in her eyes a shining excitement. There was a golf cap on her head, a mac kintosh about her shoulders and it was 0 o'clock. I stared. "Come away, come away, take me into the night!" she chanted lightly. "You foolish child," I answered, al lured by her bright eyes. I thought 1 had driven her away; but in a moinoent she was back, clasp ing a great coat and my boots. "Put them on," she commanded and 1 obeyed, but less her words than tlie spell her witchery cast. She neither caught my hand nor laid her own upon my arm; but went before me with a light grace, until we were in the avenue, flying swiftly, between the rows of pale and rain drenehed roses, llehind us the house, among the trees, a pile of shadows and blackness. The small windows set here and there in the thick walls flashed like jewels through an iron filagree. The wind filled the air with sighing, the rain spread veils of moist ure. It was elf land and Virginia had drunk in the intoxication of the night. She went racing away like a mad thing out and over the hill, until we were standing brearhless side by side, looking upon the dainty lighted village that slept at our feet, wrapped in rain and darkness. "When the hounds of spring are on winter's traces, the mother of months in meadow and plain, "Fills the shadows and windy places with lisp of leaves ana ripple of rain," sang Virginia sweetly, lifting her face to the sky. "It's spring, spring, spring spring!" she laughed, swinging to and fro. Smell the pine and the violets and now come home." So we went. Half an hour later she was sitting by the lire bending demurely over her embroidery. When I threw open the hall door, letting in a rush of wind and leaves, she raised her eyebrows. "Oh, be careful," she cried. "There's such a draught." EDITH L. LEWIS. Firet publication Aug. 6. i In. the matter of , In the County the Estate of A me- Court of Lancaster lia H.
