Giffen, of Lincoln dropped into Chattanooga yesterday, coming directly rrom Chicago He will will report for assignment to General Brooke this morning. It is claimed here that Major Giffen may succeed Lieuten ant Colonel Senn as chief surgeon of the camp. Several of the boys called on Major Giffen at his room in be Read house last night. Of course he was glad to see them. He said ho was as signed to the Sixth corps under Gen eral Wilson, but an this corps is known only on paper, he expected to be given some real work to do at Laiter hospital. Then he showed the boys his outfit. It is one of the most completo on the grounds, consisting of ths blue regula tion uniform, a white duck, a white duck, a white cloth suit resembling closely woven Clay worsted, and a Khakle with Bedford cord trousers. His riding boots, gauntlets, spurs and other equipments were just as complete and composed of as fine material as his uni forms. It isevihentthat ho intends to enter the service well equipped. Nat Mansfield, of whom Lincoln peo ple have very pleasant memories gained in times when he used to visit his sister, Mrs. Mosher, sails today for Geneva. After Wheeling from there through Switzerland and down the Rhine he will sale from Hamburg the Inst of August. In the meanwhile Miss Lyle Mansfield and Mrs. Mansfield will spend the summer in some cool eaetern placo and the first of October will find them in Omaha for the purpose of visiting the exposition . Miss Littie Wightman, of Sidney, Iowa, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. J. A. Barrett. Miss Elizabeth Bontell has returned to Chicago after a pleasant visit with Miss Charlotte Clark. Miss Selma Wiggechom, who was vis iting friends here for a few days, has re turned to Ashland. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Truo have been been the guests of the latter's parents for the past week. Dr. and Mrs. F. S. Stein and daughter lefton Wednesday for Alexandria, Minn., for an extended visit. Miss Price, who has made many warm friends in hpr visits to Lincoln, is now visitine Mrs. W. M. Miss Margaret Winger entertained a few friends informally on Tuesday morn ing, for her guest, Miss Trelle Holdbrook, of Falls City. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Funke spread a picnic lunch in their lawn on the Fourth of July and shared both with a few intimate friends. Friends of Mr. L. C. Richards are glad to hear that ho is rapidly conva lescing from a threatened attack of typhoid fever. Died, at Chickamauga, in the Division hospital, private Nelson Sawyer, of D company, Nebraska volunteers, aged nineteen years. Died on Tuesday morning, July 5, Stewart S. McConiga, aged seventy years. Mr. McConiga came to Lincoln when it was founded. He wa9 the first registor of deeds in the United States land office. Died, at the Sanitarium, July 5, from CBncer, Mrs. A. Marine, of York, aged 55 years. Her son, C. L.
