Lcat on watch or ring, Lcat on diamond stoat, Lcat on aaythtag , Lcat by Uncle Cobs, LONDON LETTER. The scene in the House of Lords on opening day wis even more brilliant than usual, and the taking of the oath by Lord Halsbury was a quaint cere mony. It does not ofen happen that a lord chancellor rises a step in the peer age during his term of office. First of all Lord Salisbury read the announce ment that Her Majesty had been pleased to confer a viscouutcy and an earldom upon her lord chancellor. Then that worthy appeared, gorgeous in brand new earl's robes of scarlet and ermine. Lord Halsbury really looked very nice, as did the two earls who acted as his sponsors. He took the oath of allegiance with great dignity, inscribed his name on the roll of peers, then sat on the Woolsack while the other new pesrs and those who had succeeded during the year performed their swearing in. Next, he went off again into retirement, whence he presently emerged in his usual lord chancellor's robes and full-bottomed wig, to take his place again upon the Woolsack and read the Queen's speech as Her Majesty's representative. There was a big gathering of peers (it was ao. ticed that the genial Duke of Portland took great interest in the proceedings) and the peeresses' gallery was full, the gowns being very spring-like and pretty. The stately Duchess of Devonshire beaded the company, as was fitting; her Grace of Portland looked lovely, as did Lady Essex; araeug the others present were Georgians of Dudley, the Mar- IXI TO 1 UK'S HEIRT And the most important factor in a well regulated kitchen is the range. The ladies did not eesm over-respectful, however, for they did not rise (as they should have done) when the lord chancellor en tered, and Louise of Devonshire actually scrutinized him through a lorgnette, while another beauty murmured that he "looked quite smart. ' The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York came in together rather late. The Duke shook hands cordially with the peers whom he knew, but the Prince, though he nodded and smiled, offered his hand to no one. I wonder what can have been the mat ter with him? He shakes hands readily enough with horse trainers. "Sic transit gloria mundiV muEt have been the cry of many on hearing of th9 death of the Marquesa de Santurce. When she married Jose de Murrieta and came first to England she was the most radiant type of Spanish beauty conceiv able. You may have heard how she captivated the Prince of Wales. He saw her at the opera and in the park then the great marriage market and beauty show and tried in vain to get an intro duction, until one day, in desperation, he rode after her and saw her enter her house when be demanded admission. It was refused. He persisted, unable to believe in the reality of the repulse. The dark eyed houri came forward quietly etill in her riding habit, and said: "Sir. my husband is away, and I do not re ceive gentlemen in his absence." The Prince went from that place with some speed. But alas! Madame de Murrieta grew spoiled when she became Marquesa had tasted the sweets of homage, .on record that she insisted rudely on an imaginary precedence over certain English peeresses. She tossed her head, pushed in front of the Countess Dudley, and we English to whom the lovely Georgina was an idol then resented the act, and looked askance at the gorgeouB weddings of her two daughters, and he other social triumphs. When the big financial smash came the pride of the Spanish upstarts had so alienated so ciety that hardly anyone was sorry for them in their fall; and the Marquesa re tired to Wadhurst to live on her own fortune unpitied, unregretted. The Mar quis lived in lodgings under the care of an old governess. Then came the dis grace to the elder daughter's husband. Poor Lady William Neville has certainly drained the cup of bitterness to the dregs. Sha did not even say good bye to her mother, who died while she was absent at church, and whose end was certainly hastened by grief over her sor rows. It may have been some comfort to her to see the smart crowd headed by royalty at the funeral services, and to see the cartloads of rare flowers that decked the close of a ruined life. Even those who had been most bitter in con demnation remembered hospitalities re ceived in the palmy days, and paid alast tribute. So a pitiable story closed. Sarah Grand has lost her husband, Dr. McFall, medical officer to the army, depot at Warrington. He had held the post for over twenty-one years and was over sixty. The mystery of that mar riage will never be solved. I must tell you of a wonderful young American violinist, who has just created a sensation at the Queen's Hall Symph ony concerts. Hrr name is Leonora Jackson. She is nineteen; a pupil of Joachim, and a Bcstonian. She won the Mendelssohn state prize at Berlin. Certainly an English audience rarely excites itself over a debutante as it did over her performance of the Vieuxtemps Concerto in D minor. The critics are in raptures.
