evening to wa'ch the old year out and
Some were rather startled to see the men
in their evening dress acd the ladies in
handsome reception gowns. Yet this
was as it should be. It seemed rather
strange because it was a change. It is
a trivial thing in itself, jet it shows a
marked tendency towaid metopDlitan
democracy a thing very noticeably ab
sent from Lincoln sce'ety. The best is
too often saved for a small clique. Tbe
general cordiality and interest displayed
on th:s night 's an improvement which
m;ght bs studied to advantage.
