President, Mrs. Ida Kelley, S.'CS North Tvventy-third street. Vice president, Mrs. H. II. Wheeler, lfilT II street. Corresponding secretary, Mrs. Milton Scott, 221 South Twenty-sevenh street. At a recent meeting of the National Association of Musical Clubs, held at the home of its president, Mrs. Theo dore Sutro.jn New York City, it was decided to hold the convention this win ter in Chicago the serond week in Jan uary. Three hundred clubs are ex pected to join at this meeting, as two hundred and thirty have already signi fied their intention of Lecoming mem bers. In a notice last week we buried the city federation prematurely. It still has figns of lirgering life and one more ef f jrt will bo made after Christmas to re suscitate it, when it is hoped the dele gates from the clubs will have the leisure to attend a meeting. In all clubs a disproportionate amount f the labor devolves upon tha program committee. The stuuy and research necessary for the preparation of a suc cessful oufiue of any subject is greater than those who hae not undertaken the work can realiz?. Wishing to min'uiize this waste of ef fort, the General Federation of Women's rlubs has issued a pamphlet by Elizabeth T. King, Baltimore, on "Suggestions for the Formation of Club Programs,'' copies of which can be obtained for one cent each from the corresponding secre tary, Mrs. Philip N. Moore, 1320 Mis sissippi Ave., St. Louis, Mo. Clubs are advised to have a definite aim in view, whether for profit or entertainment. The general meetings should be ren dered as attractive as possible and all subjects requiring continuous investiga tion or thought should .bo saved for the department mce'ings upon whose de velopment the real mental growth of the club depends. The wisdjm is also sug gested in "Joining Eome of the many ex cellent popular courses of reading and study issued by university extension courses, reading circles, etc. The pop ular four years" course of the Chautau qua Literary and Scientific Circle is ad mirabl adapted for the general reader. In this way the chairman is sived much unnecessary toil, and the class benefits by the connection with a well organized scheme at a very small expens", while due allowance is left for individual de velopments. Chairmen are also advised to keep in touch with the leading educational institutions of their communities, and when necessary have an advisory in structor help formulate a course or pre pare a bibliography. It seems too (though this is not mentioned in the article) that there might be more inter change of programs among the many clubs cf this country. When a certain courseof study has been pursued suc cessful!' by any club, it would surely bo a pleasure to its members to pass on the information to another organization de siring to follow in that same line of thought. The suggestions close with the following paragraph: "There will also be more time' and strength left, by a wise conservation of etergy, not only Tor the ordinary club comfort and pleas ures, but also for the promotion of Eome departments of local interests, Euch as village improvement ussociations in small towns or household science sec tions everywhere. But the best gain of all. through this i.o-operative policy, is a much-needed consciousness of the sol idarity of the human race, n centraliza tion wi. bin the club of the varied in terests of the community, a development of local resourse3 often ignored by mem bers, and a connection with widespread national movements which will all ulti mately enrich and enlighten both in dividuals ant. clubs, and provide end lei b material for programs."
