MUSICAL MENTION
The following is :i critique from tho
Omaha Wurltl-Ilerahl and concerns a
concert in which some Lincoln singers
participated.
"One fault the paragrapher finds
with church concerts when tho promot
ers put their shoulders to the wheels is
a fact that such a long list of clever per
formers are gathered together, and when
it is over, one's mind is u mass o! con
tlicting tones and a critique is well nigh
impossible. This was apparent on Fri
day evening at tho Lowe Avenue Pres
bt?rian church, when a musical and
literary entertainment was given under
the auspices of the Ladies' Aid society.
Mrs. David A. Campbell of Lincoln,
fresh from her European conquer t1. was
the loadstono of attraction. Her .ncora
parable voice filled the church with the
sweetest hhimony and carried oie above
lhe sordid matters of every day life. The
softness of her tones and her .'hadin-r
were really wonderful, and those who
came afterward bad a herculean task in
their bid for appreciation, but the audi
ence was in receptive mood, and while it
doubtless carried away remembrance
of Mrs. Campbell it did not fail in its
appreciation of the other numbers on
the- program.
Mrs. Charles S. Lippinco't, the fore
most soprano of Lincoln, did Eonae excel
lent work. Mrs. J. I. Cook created a de
cided impression in her rendering of the
"Sands o Dee.' Miss Getty followed
Mrs. Campbell with a couple"", and by
ber superb sieging righted tho audience
that had not yet recovered from" tho ef
fects of Mrs. Campbell's solo. Mr. W.
II. Wilbur was on the program for the
second numLer of the secand part of i
the program. Lut at the request of .Mrs. j
Lippin'.uitr, changed places with I
her ami iojk the li'th r umber. I
It ws a dangerous thing t do.!
asthu geiii'cman had r.os leen heard
and the audience was getting tired, it
beirg very close to 11 o'clock when bis!
numuer wa reachel. but the substi-
tution p-ovtd fortunate, and Mr.,
Wilbur must be credited with one of
the mjst Hppreciable numbers on the
program. Dr. R. W. Bailey sang very!
well, in fac" t is seldom that he has
ever done better. Miss Clara Hawley, i
one of tho best pianists in the city. Mr.
J. I Cook and Mrs. Jessie Broivn
Dora-aid, thtf elocutionist, relieved the
.program of tny possible monoton.
Prof. I uckfr of Glcnwood arid Mia
Nettie Haverly were the accompanists'
of the evening and did much to make
the concert enjoyable. Mi s Clara
Blumer, Mif. Zimmer and Mrs. Rose,
Macumber alsi lent valuable assistance ,
