The Cockier has recieved the follow
ing Bote from Mka Julia Haskell, of
Wakefhld, Neb. It exonerates Mis
Gray from the charge of mutilating the
records, and a retraction of the charges
made in this papei is dueier. It is
cheerfully made. The charge would
never have been made in the titst place
if Miss Gray bad preserved the impar
tiality becoming a secretary in other
thiegs peruining to the Woman's
Weekly. 'Nevertheless the editor of
The Cocrieb regrets having made
the charges and is very glad of
the opportunity to retract them.

The Matinee Musicale gave a program-'
of '"Variations. Etudes and Serenades,"
at the meeting on Monday, preceded by
an interesting talk from Mrs. A. S. Ray
mond on ber musical recollections of
Dresden and Bayrenth, illustrated by
photographs of the opera houses and of
famous singers. Many German pro
grams were also distributed to be ex
amined by those interested.
The time of meeting for the Matinee
Musicale has been altered to suit many
buey members: and for the future the
programs will b:gin promptly at 4
o'clock, but "active members" are ex
pected ta bs present at half past three
o'clock for a short business session.
The Department of Civics met on
Wednesday ,aItrncon, at the room in
the Salisbury block. A paper upon the
"Development or Constitutional Liberty
in the English Colonies" was read by
Mrs. John A. Ames, followed by a gen
eral discussion led by Mrs. Rudolph
Rehlaender.
The city improvement society met at
10 o'clock Wednesday morning at the
Capitol building in the reception rcom

Mrs. Nellie M. Richardson who had
been appointed to examine the city
ordinances to see if there was an ordi
nance prohibiting the pasting of
objectionable advertising and thea
tre pictures reported np law cov
ering this. On motion of Mrs.
McConnell, Mrs. Richardson was a6ked
to prepare an ordinance in conjunction
with the city attorney to present to the
city Council prohibiting the pasting of
indecent pictures upon bill boards and
other public places.
A general movement toward this end
is being carried oa in state legislatures
and municipalities by the women's clubs
especially the department of child study,
civic societies and they have very gener
ally the hearty co-operation of teachers
and school boards.
