The aver age amount of wealth ixissessed by the Lincoln voter is said to he larger than in other cities of the same size, but it is only a few hundred dollars. This average citizen then, as long as lie is in the majority, is in control of the situation here, and uninfluenced by bribes, his instinct, if not. his intel ligence, leads him to hang on to the rights and priveleges which he and other residents acquire by residence in the city. They have acquired it not by purchase but by the mere act of lodging, eaiing and working here. This is all the claim that the majority of rest- dents have, but if it were not for them aided by a strong wind, againBt which the place would !e a wilderness with the 'varsity team bad to struggle, real estate at so much per acre. The The patrons of the Ames game confi inany who consume' little apiece are dently expected to see the score cot less more than the few whoconsume much than thirty or forty pointp, and the apiece. The many make business good or bad. It is to their interest to retain control of the franchises. And -when it comes to voting, instinct, if 'nothing more will dirert them to reiectanv proposition in the direc- "tion of private ownership of public property. The Gas company makes its own rules and its right there is none to dispute. Many of those rules are directed against the small con sumer. For instance meter rent is collected unless the bill reaches a 'certain fixed sum which the company 'declares that all customers shall pay per month. This principal is direct 'ly contrary to the basis of community assessment which is that from him "who has much, much will be assessed. And from who has little, little will be collected. Selling city functions to an indivi dual or a company does not remove them from politics. Is there any body in thecity more in politics than Mr. I). E. Thompson? Is there any thing more in politics than the city lighting? In the last year it has de- cided questions and persons apparent- "ly not at all connected with it. Pri- vate ownership of public property re- moves the control still further from 'the people, without whom the property would be valueless. Ame3-game, is a poor one. Ames defeated the uni versity team on October 8th tea to nothing. But when one considers that the Ames team has been in training for eight weeks, and six weeks under Warner, at present the ioad coach of Cornell, one cess why Nebraska was beaten- If the score had been thirty instead of ten, no one need have been surprised, for the Ames college team is at the height of its skill and team work. Man for man, it outweighed the univer sity team fifteen pounds, and not only possessed of these advantages it was players of that team herself declared that it would not be less than thbt. The disappointment can be imagined when only the already eta'ed score was made. Although a victory thy felt it as a de feat, for Nebraska h.d been under a coach but a week, and had not lined up .a single t me against a second eleven. There were seven ntw men upon the university team sni though new to each other played exci lient team work for this early period in the saason. Coach Robinson is unusually pleased with the prospect and declares himself more and mora confident of winning the pennant this year. The signals are still new and it will be a iittle time be fore the men have totally familiarized themselves with them, but as fir as the plays and formations themselves go, tbey are already understood and prac ticed. One play especially was a gcod ground gainer in the play at Ames, and it is the same which was used so effectively against Iowa last year. Several new plays are now being worked and the coach hopes to bring them to a conclusion before the end of the week. Oi.e point the home n weak in this year compared to last year, and that is in lie! ing, New material is constantly being tried in hope of discovering a new kicker, but bo far nothing has r-bulted. But taken as a whole the team is s'ronger behind the line and in it than it was last season. For the first time a second eleven has been organized. It has its own captain and coach and k entirely . distinct from the firat eleven'. Almost identical with this organization there has grown a spirit of rivalry" between the two, and it k the ambition of the second to score on the first About fifteen to twenty men are seen daily trying on the second, for it k from the second that material is chocen for the finish. Of course thie team lacks the weight and experience ot filled up, and the whole ground was so hard that it had to be plowed up and rahed over.
