Her sister, whoss serious iliness called her there, died last week. The audience at the May festival was a delight to the ejo and the ear. Light dresses prevailed and men were scarce as in a church. There wero no cat-calls or Bupe-guying that peculiar form of amusement which never fails to divert the gamins of the university and the street was absent. The effect en semble of the audience the listening ones was most brilliant and especially soothing to the newspaper hacks whose ears have been split by college yells and whietles, whose ryes have been dulled by rows of empty seats and who have been eickened by the eound and smell of spitting all winter long. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Smith of Boston, Mass., are the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith. UNIVERSITY NEWS. The seniors will hold a picnic Satur day in a grove a mile beyond tho penitentiary. Ihiy will start at 1 p. m., and about fifty or sixty are going. These will bo a general clas3 spread, a ball game a general good time. The society of American wars in the state of Minnesota, informed Chancellor MacLcan that he had been elected un animously to the companionship as an honorary member of that order. Mits Chamberlin will spend Sunday in her home in Valparaso, this state. Prof. Wolfe will lecture in Dorchester before a Teachers' Institute, May 8. Chancellor MacLean will lecture be fore the YIN. C. A. of Kansas univer sity at Lawrenco Sunday. Ho was de layed from going on the time, previously announced, by the high water. The Young Women's Gymnasium ex hibition will be held Saturday evening Mr. Harry Smith of Council Bluffs is visiting his brother L. C. Smith. . Dr. Bessey addressed the congrega tion of the Third Presbjtcrian church Friday night on tho "Vegetable King dom." The lecture was illustrated by charts. The Botanical department has re ceived from the depaitment of agricul ture in Washington a series of question 1 rotative to the investigation of native grasEesotthe northwest. This depait ment has always been much interested in the study of .this problem and wi I take especial interest in this woik. Dellan Tau Delta will give a dancing party at the beach May 14. The Pdlladians will have an outing in the near future. The zoological club met List Tuesday in the zoological library. Papera were read by Mies Bonnell, Mr. Morison, Mr. Guyer, and Dr. Wolcolt. The subject for general discussion was trichina. About fifteen wero present. Dr. Ward lectured Friday evening on Deep Sea life. The libraries and laboratories wero closed Friday afternoon on account of Field day. The Cope program was held iast Saturday as announced. Dr. Ward planned the program which was very interesting. Dr. Barbour gave a talk on Prof. Cope's work as a paleontologist. He gave a number of interesting stories connected with tho great scien tific struggles in which Prof. Cope was involved. Dr. Bessey spoke of Cope's work in general science and of the personal acquaintance which he formed with the Piofessor in the American as sociation for tho advancement of scienc. Prof. Sweazy epoke of him from the standpoint of one not having personal acquaintance. Prof. Cope was un doubtedly the greatest American scientist since Agassiz. Dr. Ward gave reminiscences in connection with Cope's friendliness toward beginners in scienti fic woik. Mis3 Edna Prey who has been sick the past week returned to school Mon day. Phi Kappa Pci held a reception Friday evening from 8 to 11 at their chaptcr houss 1G30 G street. Tho receiving committee were: Nr. and Mts. ImhofT, Dr. and Mrs. Ladd, Mr. and Mrs. Gere, Mr. and Mts. Weeks. About four hundred and fifty invita tions wero issued. Music and a general good time was indulged in. The Electrical Engineers of the uni versity enjoyed a treat last week in a course of nine lectures by Mr. E. C Willyoung, on the subject of Electrical Measuring Instruments. Mr. Willyoung is a designer of instruments and his talk was a valuable one as well as very interesting. A number of professors and engineers was present at each lecture. Mr. W.llyoung discussed in much de tail the way in which standard resis tances, standard cells, galvanometers, wbcatstone's bridges and other well known and, to the engineer, funda mental apparatus, is constructad. Tho methods by which accuracy in manu facture is secured wero clearly set forth. Thursday evening tho Society of Electrical Engineers tendered Mr. Will young a reception at tho chapter house of Phi Kappa Psi. A number of professors and the.'c wives were present and a pleasant even ing was passed. At a special meeting of the society Mr. Willyoung was made an honorable member. Corey, at their borne, 2510 Viae strest. to honor the twenty fourth birthday of their nephew. Stove Corey. Nothing was spared in order to make the occasion a happy one. Applo blossoms lent their boauty and frag rance to tho rooms and everything seem ed to send forth a hcaity welcome. During tho evening a pleasing and original poem, dedicated to Mr. Co'ey, was read by William Roed Dunroy. Late ic the ovening daintily covered lunch taDles wero brought into the back parlors and the guests gathered around thesd tablos in order to eat and drink to the health of their host. Even tho sur prises didn't cease here. For the last course a beautiful jewelled birthday cake was passed and of course Mr.Corey received the largest pieco containing a fine gold watch. He failed to see the point at first, but it was readily Been by the guests when thoy each discovered an opal stick pin in their piece. Follow ing this tiny pieces of toast, tied to gether with pink ribbon, were given each guest, and again all were surprised to find that these mysterious little bundles contained subjects opon which they were expected to give minuto talks. Mr. W. J. Lowrie acted as toastmaster, and this part of the evening's entertain ment proved to be particularly pleasing. Mr. Corey gave a very feeling and happy response, after which tho com pany soon departtd, taking with them tho happiest of mexorics and leaving with Mr. Corey their bast wishes for many happy r.turr.s of the day. Tuesday evening a merry crowd of about twenty-five young people gave Miss Lola Dewitt a surprise at herhome No. 850 N. 25th etreet. Music and num erous games afforded the young people much pleasure. Lake Geneva is a beautiful summer resort, and presents many attractions bcsido3 the meetings. Dr. Charles Cuthbert Ha'l is to bo tbero and other men and women of note. The expense from Lincoln for tho entire trip, including a ten days' stay, is only $35. About sixty ladies were present. PlanB for the membership work were presented and much interest was shown. The Bucy- rus Mandolin Club kindly provided the music. Tuesday evening at the Bible class Prof. Sherman lectured. His subject was "Interpreting the Bible as Litera ture." He gave a very instructive and helpful talk. The next lctura -will be tho first Tuesday in June by Prof. Luckey. His topic is 'The Value cf Child Study to tho Sunday School Teacher." All are welcomo to this class. Mr. Bittner returns here after a very successful trip through the west. He has 10 pictures on his triograph, among which are the inaugu ration pictures, McKinlcy taking oath of office, lynching of a murderer and tho Corbctt-Courtney fight. The company has been greatly strengthened since its engagement here and now contains seven specialty artists that arc as good as can be prccured. In speaking of Mahara's colored min strels, who are billed at the Lansing Theatro next Tuesday, May the lltb, the San Francisco Examiner says: "Mahara'B minstrels ar9, without doubt, one of the finest that has ever appeired here. The first part as presented by the thirty-fivo gentlemen composing tho troupo is one of the best that has been seen in this city. There are a number of good singers in the company and the jokes between the interlocutor and the endmen have the rare virtue of novelty as well as genuine humor. Tho olio is varied and attractive, serv ing, to introduce a number of clever specialties by men who are leaders in their respective lines."
