FRANCES RECTOR.
These young ladies have kept a care
ful record of their benefactions and
business meetings. The sscretary's
book faithfully records the doings of
their unpretentious mission. The
members have gone about their work
not in the eelf-concious spirit of "eluin
ming," but to learn the bitterners of the
posrest and to help with humility as
they had opportuuity. Their flushed
cheeks, tearful eyes and timid, tender
words have warmed hearts that, "old
close'and coal could net thaw. That they
have not allowed criticism or waning
enthusiasm to inteifere with their plan
of work speaks well for the earnestness
ot their purpose.
Sorosts met May 4th with Mrs. Mc
Gahey. Mrs. Lambertson read a well pre
pared paper on The Rise of the Banking
System. She told of the origin, tunc
tion and utility of banks after which she
described the workings of the great
banks of Europe particularly tbe banks
ot England and the backs of Scotland,
tbe latter probably, nearer perfection
than any other European bank. The
balance ot her paper was devoted to a
history ot banks in the United States.
She spoke particularly of the bank of
Philadelphia established in 1790, and of
Jackson's conflict with the banks.
This part of her paper called forth tome
discussion. She named the banks in
operation now private savings, state,
national and told ot the nature ot their
organization, thiir advantage and de
fects and read reports of Mr. Carlisle
and Mr. Eckels which suggested
remedies for the latter. The club will
meet with Mrs. Miller 1849 C street.
May 18th. Mrs. Maule will read a
paper on "Our Foreign Relations."
