Richardp, 21 North Sixteenth street. The "Woman's Club' seldom gives a musical program in its regular routine of work? but the last meeting held at Mrs. Arthur Wellman's was an excep tian. After the ordinary routine of busi ness, and the hour's study of the lesson which was the beginnings of Roman history the program for the afternoon was taken up. Four carefully prepared essays were read. Mrs. Moore gave a paper on "Lowell Mason," Mrs. Edwards on "Camilla Urso." Me6dames Daggy and Gilbert gave a vocal duet. This was followed by papers 03 music and on educative forca, namely Mrs. Street's on "Music in the Dome,' and Mrs. Stewart's on "Influences of Sacred Mu6ic" Mesdames Munson and Street rendered a vocal duet and Mrs. Gilbert followed with a vocal solo which closed the afternoon session. Mrs. Walker W. C. T. U. state president was present and gave a short helpful talk which was appreciated by the members of the club. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Love. York, March 29.1597. It was New York women who first assumed the responsibility of keeping tin streets and sidewalks of the city cleaned. Chicago and various other cities followed until one after another the cities of this cjuntry were cleaned according to the thorough rules of fern inine house-cleaning. The city improvement society met Tuesday iu conjunction with the depart ment of civics of the Woman's club at the club rooms. The attendance was good and interest unabated. The object of this organization is co-opetation with city officials in securing the execution of ordinances relating to the health and beauty of the city and the cultivation of civic pride by all citizens. Both officers and citizens have shown cordiality to the Lew movement and as the object be comes understood there is no doubt that Lincoln will put 03 its new dress simul taneously with the new business life into which it is just entering. Mrs. Langworthy Taylor was in the chair and Mrs Cjffroth in her place as secretary. . A communication from the Junior Sorosis club expressed appreciation of the socittv's work, accompanied with a check for , was received with smiles and vote of thanks. Mrs. Tate, chairman of the committee on streets, reported a conference with the street commissioner n3 to ordinances and difficulties in enforcement throwing light upon questions that had been raised at previous meetings. Mrs. Wheeler reported progress of work at the Capital school inviting visitors as soon as the grass is green. Mrs. Kelly, of the Vine street fcbool. had secured interest of teachers and scholars in window boxes and is makin; basic slowly. Mrs. Bushnell, for the Prescott building, reported meeting of patrons, Mr. Hackney of the school board being present and promising tree3. Professor Bruner alto was in terested and promised to assist in eccur ing treep. Mrs. Nellie M. Richardson reported her visit to Denver for information as to the improvements prosecuted there. The ladies there have been organized for a j ear, but were glad to learn of Lincoln methods. The streets and al!es are well kept, tho walks are washed frequently the cars are clean, the children at work and she could learn about the society from almost an one, as it is one of ih; most popular institu tionsin thec'.ty. Tho ladies planned to purchase garbage cans in the principal streets, but before the purchase was made the council took up the matter and attended to it in tine shape. Every, body who sees fruit or papar or any thing that can be taken in the hand on the pavement picks it up and puts it in the can. Tho most aristocratic ladies do this. Placards explaining ordinances and penalties are placed in suitable places. Mrs. G. M. Limbertson gave her experience in California cities, in which tines and imprisonments were the penalties executed for spitting on side walks The following resolution ap preciative of our own city co'jucil was passed unanimously: "Whereas we have heard with Treas ure of the action taken by the city council upon motion of Councilman Woodward that steps be taken toward the placing of spittoons upon our streets that the filthy practici of expectorat ing upon our sidewalks be suppressed and that the health officer be instructed to strictly enforca the more important of the health ordinances; therefore be it "Resolved. That we heartily indorse the action taken and congratulate both council and city upon this advance step looking to the great improvement in the general appearance and health of the city.' Tne current events department of the womans club hold a meeting this after noon and are under the management of Mrs. Hohnian of the commercial parlors 1116 P street. A full attendance was present last week. The program con sisted of items of news from the Units d States and other countries. Everj Inch of available space In the T. W. C. A. rooms was filled with hap py, eager people Monday evening:, when Mrs. Irene McMichael read in a clear and pleading voice, Tennyson's poem. "The Dream of Fair Woman." In the corner of the room a stage had been improvised with half drawn curtains. During the reading of the poem, a bevy of pretty girls apieared in tab leau representing the fair woman spoken of In the poem. The costumes in every case were handsome and ap prlate. The assignments were: Beauty, Helena Hertford; Anguish, Miss Hol brook; Helen of Troy, Gertrude Lyon; Rosamond. Nellie Griggs; Eleanor, Ma rian Smith; Cleopatra, Ruby Prindle; Joan of Arc, Dora Auman; Jeptha's daughter. Rose Thome. Miss Redford sang quite sweetly, "The Beating of My Own Heart." Her encore was "Should Auld Acquaintance be Forgot." Miss Griggs sang the Irish folk song, "My Darling," in a pleasing manner. She responded to an encore with a Ger man song. A conversazione followed the program. Miss Cora Hardy will have charge of the entertainment committee for the next two months, at least. Mrs. G. M. Lambertson Is the chairman of the com mittee of twenty efficient ladies. The evening at home will consist of a course of lectures on practical and interesting topics. These meetings, instead of Fri days, will occur every Monday even ing in the club rooms. It is the desire of the ladles to have on the second evening of the month a musicale; on the third, games, and on the fourth miscellaneous entertain ment. During the summer 'these meetings will be held at the homes of the ladies. The members meetin gat the rooms will walk to the house and there listen to th program. Various outings in connection with the amusements are in prospect, such as tennis clubs, lawn parties, eac. The first evening under the manage ment of the new committee will be April 19th. Tuesday, April 6th. Prof. Bessey will lecture In the club rooms on "Elocution and the Bible," at 7:30 before the regular bible class. All are invited. Wednesday. April 7th, the magazine club will meet at 7:13 at club rooms. Thursday, cooking class meets at 3 o'clock. Miss Wild, secretary .expects to leave the first of the week for Detroit, to at tend the bi-ennlal convention of the as sociation of the United States and Can ada.
