"Monte Cristo" nt the Lansing.
It seems funny, but tals of burled
treasure and of fabulous wealth ac
quired by luck instead of by the
sweat of your brow, have a fascination
for all well-ordered people. If this
Fere not so the Count of Monte Cristo
would not still be stalking around the
country after displaying his diamonds
for some fifteen years not counting
the years that Charles Fechter did the
same thing.
This sudden acquisition and subse
quent promiscuous scattering of untold
wealth makes one feel loose and care
less for several hours and haunts you
in your dreams. In the ras of Dumas

beautifully drawn by Mr. Raid's mas

wholesome. In the play the relative im
portance of the characters has been
somewhat changed, so as to make
more obscure the character of Hawes
and bring to the fore the interesting

hero this wealthjs variously estimated
at from one .hundred to three hundred
millions and forty-five cents allowing
for shrinkage on account of hard times.
, The Most attractive feature in the
old play is the contrast between Ed
mund Daatps as ship's mate, as a pris
oner, as priest and as the Count of
Monte Cristo. James O'Neill Is easily
the best romantic actor in this country.
He has a fine figure, a warm, living
iexible voice and grace both in posing
and active movement And he has al
ways been blessed with an artistic "tem
perament I do not blame him for
continuing to play "Monte Cristo" as
Ions as the people want to see it
Of course he has not used all the gifts
that nature has endowed him with to
their fullest advantage, but there is
no law compelling him to do so. A
very competent cast fine scenery and
elegant costumes are in evidence, the
same as in former years. "Monte Cris
to" bids fair to out-last "The Prisoner
of Zenda" and all the ether so-called
romantic plays and to draw crowds in
the next generation.

is distinct and positively new and fresh
type to th'e stage. Robson will surprise
his many admirers by the ease ot his
transition from a business man or man
of the world to a farmer. Bis quality as
a comedian has never been shown to
better advantage. The play is supple
and unconventional in construction, and
is happily permeatel.by an abundance
of the wholesome grace of nature. "The

cast has been especially engaged for

"Happy" Ward, of Ward and Vokes,
the successful young stars of "A Run On
Two Kay jrouna frogs from Inland bocf ,
Had spent the night in drinking;
As morning broke and they awoke,
While yet their cjea were blinking,
A farmer's pail came to the swale.
And caught them quick as winking.
'Ere they could gather scattered senses,
Or breathe a prayer for past offenses.
The granger grave that guileless man
Had dumped them in a milkman's can.
The can filled up, the cover down,
They soon are started off to town.
The luckless frogs begin to quake.
And sober up on cold milk shake.
They quickly find their breath will stop
Unless they swim upon the top.
They swim (or life and kick and swim.
Until their weary eyes grow dim;
Their muscles, ache, their breath grows short,
And gasping, f peaks one weary sport :
"Say, dear old boy, it's pretty tough
To die so young, but I've enough
Of kicks for life. No more I'll try it,
I was not raised on a milk diet."
"Tot, tut, my lad.', the other cries, C3
"A frog's do dead until he dies.
Let's keep on kicking, that's my plan.
We may yet see outside this can."
"No use, no use," faint heart replied.
Turned up bis toes and gently died.
The braver frog, undaunted still,
Kept kicking with right good will,
Until, with joy too great to utter,
He found he'd churned a lamp of butter,
And climbing on that chunk of grease.
He floated round with greatest ease.
MORAL.
When limes are hard no trade in town
Don't get discouraged and go down.
But struggle still no murmer utter
A few more kicks may bring the butter.
