was replete with historical even's and

S- rcsis met January 2Gth with Mrs.
Hall. Twenty-one members responded
to roll call. Mre. Beebe gave a thought
ful and most carefully prepared paper
on "Mistress and Maid." The ladies
shoved keenest appreciation of the sub
ject and tho treatment thereof, as was
evidenced by their animated discussion.
Mrs. Beebe h9B had unusual opportuni
ties for research. Among them a resi
dence of some months in Chicago, where
Bho had conversations with Miss Ad
dams and a chance to see the practical
working of bcr projects. Tho strongest
points brought out in the paper wore
.the intensity of feeling against domestic
service among girls and the fact of their
isolation in it, despite efforts of the best
of mistresses. Tho principal factors in
the solution of the problem were build
ing of club bouses and institution of
training classes. The club will meet
with Mrs. Lee?, 1701 D street. February
0th. Mrs. Hartley will lead, her sub
ject being '-What Undertakings for the
Benefit of the Public Can Best be Man
aged by tho Municipalitj?"
A PLEASANT CLUI1 MEETING AT PLATTS
MOLTH. The Woman's club held a most en
joys bio meeting last even'ng at the
hospitable home of Mrs. Walker. Mrs.
Stoutenborough being unable to be pres
ent, Mrs. Butler p-esided. After the
usual routine business, the meeting was
turned over to Mrs. Travis, leader of the
department of Erglish literature, who
had prepared a most interes ing pro
gram. Roll call was responded to by quota
tions from Dryden A delightful paper,
"Dry den-Character Sketch and
Works," was read by Mrs. Morissy and
listened to with great attention.
Mis Gass followed with a very witty
and bright discussion of the "Influences
thnt Surrounded Dryden and Produced
His Style of Writing." M iss Gass' paper
showed o reful preparation and was
greatly enjoyed.
Mrs. Streight next read a paper on
"John Eunjan." She desci ibed him as
somewhat erratic, but a man of great
lalents, as evimed by his several works,
chief of which, "Pilgrim's Progress,"'
Cowper has immortalized in his beauti
ful pot m, which the length of this ar
ticle precludes inserting.
Mrs. Unruh read briefly from h's
"Progress,"' while Mrs. Waugh closed

Tho New Book Review Club met with
Mre. Stonebreaker Wednesday. January
27. Tho members nearly all together,
making a very charming circle. After
welcoming our guests the minutes of
last meeting were read acd approved.
A novo! treat was in store for us through
the kindness of Mr. Penney. A gramo
phone which brought inarches, two
steps and banjo solo-5 into our midst in a
most delightful manner.
A letter from Mrs. Peattie was read by
Mrs. A. A" Scott which gave us a very
interesting peep into her busy earnest
life. Mrs. Stephen Hoover gave 119 her
book, "A Mountain Woman," which is
full of rare pictures, tender pathos and
keen humor, like the fair author. Many
of her sketches are like rare etchingp,
artistic lines, shades and lights, tell
stories of rharacter which are touching
and true of many sad human hearts,
whether west in our own state, or north
or south. Mrs. P is a charming wom
an with interesting talents and a true
womanly soul. Wo wish her success
and much happiness in her new field of
work.
Our toasts were of Nansen, bills just
passed in our own senate, what
congress ought to do fcr our banks,
theatre hats should come off, the seal of
the United States, our own flag in Eng
land, how to reread a book, musical tal
ent in this country, the new opera Isis,
tho genius of Thoreau.
Adjourned to meet February 10.
