An Impression of the Legislature.
The members of the house were ex
cited. Some stood up, some sat down,
some walked back and forth, but all
were talking as if their very life depend
ed on their being heard above the rab
ble. An impressive summons from the
speaker and all was quiet in the large
room. Even the people in the ga'leries
instructively obeyed the summons and
listened intently, for once forgetting to
talk.
The silence was restful.
'One man rose to his feet.
He wore a large checked suit that
looked as if it had been hung out in a
rain storm. The cotton threads had
shrunk and on first glance it looked as if
the suit had been made of seersucker.
The sleeves were about three inches too
short. On his head a crop of sorrel hair
mixed with gray, The sides of his face
were covered with the same briar-bush,
only a shade darker.
When a boy he seldom used a comb
and when ho grew older and felt the
teed of smoothing out his locks, they
had proved refractory and would not
obey the touch of the comb and the
will of the owner.
All eytswere turned on the legislator.
After rolling a cud around in his
mouth and lodging it under his tongue
he said: "I don't see any use of making
such a racket over a little thing. County
aintgot no interest in that bill any
how."
Everj thing has been nicely arranged
for the comfort and ease of the people
who sit in the chairs and "look as wise
as owls" and make the laws that shall
govern the people of the sta'e. Nicely
Iolished chairs with good high backs. I
believe, much to the chagrin of the oc
cupants, the cushions were forgotten.
Footstools, cushioned ones of course,
would have been very nice things to
have had but the back or arm of a chair
can be used as a substitute. Cuspidors
are placed just the right distance from
the legislator's chair. It is needless to
say they, the cuspidors, are used inces
sently sometimes thiy are, hit, some
times they are cot.

"What will you do if she refusei
you?"
"Save money."
He Will you write to me while I am
away.
She Yes, if you will stay away long
enough.
"A man can't get along in this world
without brains."
"Do jou mind telling me the secret of
your success?"'
