The wildest of wiHcats bo far pub
lished in this campaign is the colossal
array of silvcrite fortunes supioeed to
kLo arrajed on tho side of the Nebraska
claimant. To be suro it is not logical,
In .its position. To have any fortune
large or small arrayed but that is
-another story. When .however, one sees
-ibo Hearsts put down at 873,000.000
Mackey, at the same, Stewart at fcJO.OOO
00 and Jones at S23.000.COO, oue is con-
trained to smile sweetly and think how
happy all these people would be were
they only seized and possessed of such
accumulations. The fact is that not
only are the figures such as do credit to
the national imagination, but the own--ere
of the reputed piles are not, as a rule,
-large owners of silver mines. The Mack--ey
combine gutted the Cotrstock ring
3ong ago, and saddled the watered stock
oa a confiding public. That eminent
Senator, Sagebrush Stewart, is more a
street car magnate than a mining one,
-and, as such progresses on a nickel and
copper basis; and the same, orsomething
'like it, is true of the other estates.
. Possibly, in case of free coiuage coming
to plague the community, there might
Le a boom of silver stocks in San Fran
cisco which would help out a few specu
lators, but the great California fortunes,
'which are being spent in' the East and
In Europe, would be injured more than
.profited.
While I have doubted the expediency
ef the movement which culminated in
the Indianapolis convention and the
putting in the field third-party cacdi--catea,
in view of the paramount import--ance
of concentrating all forces against
Bryan and his fool platform, I now see
that it has gained f uch momentum and
-.assumed such proportions that I am in--dined
to believe that instead of weaken,
.tag the power of attack on the Free-Sil-ver
Populists, it will .prove a Blucher
reinforcement. The sturdy, honest and
taouadly Democratic declarations of the
3latform cannot fail to draw to its sup
port every Democrat, South, North,
ast or West, who has not become an
out and out Populist, and whose Dem
ocracy is too deep-dyed, crwhoae hatred
of protection and plutocracy forbids him
to vote forMcKiuley.
I am not of the half-measured sort of
wen, and do not believe in half votes.
-As Eryan must be defeated or the coun
try go to the devil, 1 believe in a full
TOte for his only possible conqueror,
-HcKinley. However, as bo many good
.Deatocrats will not go that far with me,
la glad now to get the half votes
"which, their support of Palmer and
Sackaer insures. UnJer all the cir--CMBstances

better soldier in the Union Army than
-was Gen. John M. Palmer. There is no
-Bounder, safer or more conservative Sen
-ator than is Senator John M. Palmer.
5eneral Buckner is a gentleman every

champion ship tour that Byran

Since his nomination Bryan's face
has been turning more and more to pop
ulism and away from democracy. Two
years, or even one year ago he would
have rebuked G root's speech at the no
tification, that speech in which he 6aul
if they could not get free silver by bal
lots they would get it by bullets. The
plain fact is, there is no democratic nat
ional party now. There is a democratic
party in the several states, or in the
most of them but the national democ
racy has been submerged in populism.
If Bryan wins, populism wins
and democracy is lost. Bryan
bad a gnat opportunity when
Ignatius Donnelly and Groot
were here to assert his patriotism. It
would have shone brighter by contrast
with the incendiary appeals of the men
from a party without traditions, and
without a reason for being except that
of attack on existing institutions. But
Bryan kept still and when he replied to
Groot, if any of his statements were
offensive to him no one knew it. It was
a great opportunity lost.
