ww- N - st-zjr THE COURIER. i . 1 . I- ' jafci? MR. GRIFFITH'S "FAUST." John Griffith presented "Faust" for the eighth or ninth time in this city Thursday night at the Lansing. Special interest attached to the performance, however, by reason of the fact that Mr. Griffith's "Mephfeto" was relieved by a new "Martha," a new "Marguerite" and a nnw "Faust. We have become so ac customed to electrical extravagances troops of little red devils and much red fire in modern popular interpretations of "Faust' that we will pass this fea ture of Mr. Griffith's presentation by without comment other than the re mark that a fair regard for the proprie ties would preclude the use of fllowers that bloom by electricity. Mr. Griffith's "Mephisto" is not the "Mephisto' he gave ub three years ago. Each year he has taken on more cun ning, more of the sinister; and we may add, has toned down some of the more vociferous qualities of his interpreta tion. His up-to-date "Mephfeto" is a subtle fiend, with a marked inclination for diabolical jests. Mr. Griffith suc ceeds in making the character hideously sinuous and facile. He is repulsive, and yet he attracts and holds the attention. If there is anything devilish and de moniac in Goethe's great character that Mr. Griffith has not found and does not portray, we are not aware of it; and he has added a few extra touches of his own. Mr. Griffith has improved. Anna Boyle is a trifle too mincing in some of the earlier scenes, but she makes on the whole the most accepta ble "Marguerite" Mr. Griffith has yet given us. The new "Martha" is well done. ' Griffith's "Faust" is well put on, skill fully acted, and this season starts on the road more evenly balanced than ever before. Mr. Griffith was billed to play "Richard III." last night. McKTNLEY WINS. He Is the Choice of 363 of 561 Excur sionist Votes. A. M.
