The savings banks depositors are the
great creditor class. They are the
"capitalists" that the silver people ace
after. The savings bank depositor has
an average of $371.36 of capital, a to
tal of $1,810,597,022. There are 4.875,519
of these depositors. The silver schem
ers propose to ceduce the average to
$185.68, the total to $905,298,501.50. The
nearly five million depositors will re
sent this assault upon their savings,
and they will wield a big influence in
the election.

Is Evolution Atheistic?
To the Editor of The Courier: A
short time ago I read in a daily paper
that a Belfast man, who was the she
author of a pamphlet entitled "Evolu
tion versus Reason and Theology."
sent a copy of his work to Mr. Glad
stone, the great English statesman. It
elicited a letter from Mr. Gladstone, in
which he deplored the existence of the
"passion of unbelief" In Iceland, stat
ing that he hoped his labors "would
have the effect of contributing to a
mcce healthy state of things."
I have not read the pamphlet, but
Mr. Gladstone's phraseology speaks
for the general attitude of the author.
Evolution has probably been respon
sible for more skeptics than any other
agency of the human intellect, but it
was never aggressive to celigion until
it was assailed by the entire Christian
world, and then evolutionists not only
turned at bay, but attacked Christi
anity in their tucn.
Science deals with matter and facts
rather than mind and soul. But the
ology was not content with this state
of things and demanded that "these
agnostics" must be theists and ac
cept the Bible for their religion and
theory. Ever since that grand theory
of evolution was first given to the
world, it has constituted matter for
commotion and stir in the religious
world. War has been waged on It
from all sides, and It has been de
nounced. In fact.rldiculed. by the
clergy in the pulpit.
Popular prejudice, however, appears
to be on the wane, and those theories,
which were at first so strongly refused,
are gradually being accepted by the
scientific world.
As a theorj-f it will always be food
for question and dispute, but its grad
ual acceptance by the more advanced
scientists of today is certainly a strong
indication of its truth. But let us
set aside the question of its truth, as
that Is of no Immediate concern to the
present subject.
Professor Wainwright, in a paper at
tacking the -theory of evolution, di
vides evolutionists into three classes;
he theistic. the atheisic. and the ag
nostic. "Evolutionists of the, first
class." he says, "admit, while those of
the second denv the existence of a
Divine Creator. By those of the third
class, that existence is simply ig
nored." These agnostics, while upholding
evolution, do not deny religion. They
simply "have no need of the hypo
thesis of God."
.But supposing we admit that hypo
thesis. The Divine Being is. and al
ways will be, a mystery to us; yet this
should be no detriment to our believ
ing in. and worshipping Him. The
same Is true of that which has been
vaguely called "Creation." Evolution
Is merely a speculation on the probable
course of that creation. and
no argument can show that
there is anything in the theory
disproving that God was the
author and originator of all things.
Evolutionists do not question God's
existence, they merely probe into the
wonders of His creation.
What can there be to hurt religion
in a theory which unveils and exposes
the marvelous works of the Divine
Being whom we are taught to look
upon as the creator of all things? In
deed, there is nothing necessarily an
tagonistic to Christianity in evolution,
and if we look at it in the right way
we can perceive. If anything, a mani
festo of absolute theism.
"Most of you," says Professor Tyn
dale, "have been forced -to listen to the
outcries and denunciations which rang
discordant through the land for some
years afttc the publication of Mr
Darwin's "Origin of Species." Well,
the world even the clerical world has
for the most part settled down in the
belief that Mr. Darwin's book simply
reflects truth of nature."
Dr. Andrew D. White, in his "His
tory of the Warfare of Science With
Geology in Chrlstendom'makes a still
more notable utterance. He says:
"My belief is that in the field left to
them their proper field the clergy
will more and more, as they cease to
struggle against scientific methods and
conclusions, do work even nobler and
more beautiful than they have hereto
fore done. And this is saying much.
My conviction is that science, though
It has evidently conquered dogmatic
theology based on biblical tests, and
ancipnt modes of thought, will go hand
In hand with religion; and that, al
though theological control will con
tinue to diminish, religion will steadily
grow strongec and stronger."
And yet Mr. Gladstone denounces
evolution as the "passion of unbelief."
For my part I am not Inclined to be
so dogmatical In my views, and hope
to see the day when Dr. White's words
will be verified.
