Dave Mercer as made his calling and
election sure by his successful handling
of the Trans-Mlsslsslppl bill. He will
succeed himself In congress. The pas
sage of the bill will start a boom In
Omaha that will affect the whole
state. Incidentally Lincoln ought to
profit by the holding of the exposition
in Omaha. President Cleveland is un
derstood to have a financial Interest
In Omaha. That may account for his
haste in signing the bill.
Henry Estabrook, he of the chiseled
countenance and delicate wit and fine
sarcasm and pleasing eloquence, was
with us again this week, and, as usual,
he scored a triumph. His Lincoln
speech, which he delivered on com
mencement day, is one of the noted
speeches of the present time. It has
given Mr. Estabrook wide fame as an
orator. It was only a week or so ago
that he delivered an address on Ben
jamin Franklin In Chicago. It was
full of poetic fervor and forceful sim
ile. By the way, that speech of Sen
ator Manderson's at the tomb of
Grant caused even the sedate and con
servative newspapers of New York to
become enthusiastic In Manderson,
Thurston and Bryan, Nebraska has a
trio of public speakers bard to beat.
Estabrook has so recently become a
Chlcagoan that he has hardly ceased
to become a Nebraskan.
The university exercises this week
have been characterized by a spirit of
dignity and earnestness. Every year
there la a noticeable Improvement in
the externals, a nearer approach to the
conditions and appearances of the
older and more settled universities.
The scholarly Influence of the new
chancellor was not without Its effect
on the various demonstrations of the
week.
It is encouraging to note the fact
that a number of well Informed gentle
men have voluntarily selected this city
for the headquarters for what bears
every Indication of becoming an Insti
tution of. considerable importance.
"Within the past few weeks there has
been formed the Lincoln Life associ
ation, an Insurance company with a
popular and to some axtent a new
form of Insurance, with the following
ofacers: A. J. Peterson, president;
James Doughty, vice-president; "W. K.
Proctor, secretary; A. I. Wilkinson,
medical director, and E. F. Phelbrook,
superintendent of agencies. The new
comers are experienced Insurance men
from Iowa and Minnesota, and will all
take up their permanent residence in
this city, which means about thirty
people added to Lincoln's population.
The company has engaged offices in
the Brace block and has already put
agents In the field.

Congressman J. B. Strode has re
turned from Washington. Notwith
standing a long and laborious session
he Is in good health.
Many Lincoln people will be Inter
ested to hear of the progress Miss
Clara Walsh has been making in her
art studies at the academy of fine arts,
Philadelphia. At the recent concours
or examinations Miss Walsh received
No. 1 in all departments and in both
concours. The only other person re
ceiving such distinction was a young
man who has been attending the acad
emy for a number of years. Miss
Walsh receives the oil portrait prize.
