Really, the most exciting thing now
adays is attending openings. The soda
water and confectionery openings are.
In their way, great. Tou get a good
deal of society and some flowers and
music thrown in with your dime's pur
chase. Wednesday I had an engage
ment with Jack at Ode Rector's and I
had planned a little joke or rather a
big Joke. At the appointed time. 2
o'clock, I was going to appear with thir
teen or fourteen of my dearest girl
friends. I figured that it would have
cost Jack about $1.50. But it rained on
the day set for the opening and Mr.
Rector was out the money that Jack
would have been compelled to spend.
I tried to arrange a similar engagement
for Saturday when the postponed op
ening will take place, but Jack won't
be In the city. If It is a nice day the
drug store will be a pretty gay place
Saturday.

romantic historical play that Mile.
Rhea will present at the Funke opera
house May 20. It treats of a subject
famllliar to all readers of English his
tory, the romantic attachment of a
great king to a poor girl, who after
wards become one of the brightest as
well as most charitable women of her
day, and who retained the regard of the
king until his death. It is said that
this story has been handled in a bril
liant manner by Mr. Paul Kester. the
young dramatist, and that he has given
the fair Rhea an admirable vehicle in
which to show her great art and re
markable versatility. New York crit
ics say that she shines in this role as
never before, and Is at all times, the
winsome, happy and lovable "Nell
Gwynne." The scenes are laid in the
time of Charles II. and give the auditor
an idea of the loves and Intrigues of
this court, as well as the manners and
customs of the ladies and courtiers
who surrounded him.
