Continued from page 4
Mrs. Manning and her claes gave a
field program to the ladies of the faculty
club and junior Sorosis on Thursday
afternoon in Union hall at the univer
sity. The room was full of ladies and
the afternoon was an enjoyable one.
There is some talk of a leap year
party to be given in the next tec days.
Some of the girls who are in what is
known as the Pleasant Hour crowd, are
discussing it.
The two card parties given by Mr.
and Mrs. George H. Clark at the Lin
coln hotel Inst Friday nod Saturday
evenings were rather large affairs.
Nearly everybody got a bid to either one
or the other of the parties. There was
a jolly crowd both nights.
Olive Latta has not returned from
Omaha at this writing. She is very
popular in that city, as her sister was
before her.
Kitharit.6 Weston, of Beatrice, has
been here several days. She is a fre
quent visitor to Lincoln, as you know.
Monday there was an excursion to
Kansas City to bear the god of the
golden hair. Going a couple of hundred
miles to hear Paderewski might bo en
joyable under certain conditions. These
certain conditions did not exist Monday,
and I concluded not to go. The truth
is Jack couldn't go. He sajs he has to
work and cannot afford to be running
around after strange gods. Some of
the girls who did go say that Pader
ewBki's hair is beautiful. I notice that
most of the people who went down to
Kansas City had a great deal more to
say of Paderewski'a hair or some other
feature of his personpl appearance than
they did of his playing.
MissMcClure left for Mt. Pleasant
last Saturday.
Miss Slaughter visited in Omaha sev
eral days this week. She was the guest
of Miss Mount.
Did you ever stop to think of the
ihoughtfulness of the Lansings and
Olivers in taking their friends into
their private boxes at the theatre?
Every time there is an entertainment at
the Lansing theatre these two families
have guests in their boxes. They go
the whole circle of their friends, which
is certainly nice of them.
My dear if jou find my letter specially
uninteresting this week, I must remind
you that there is nothing to write
about. Yours lovingly,
Eleanor.
Lincoln, Neb., Friday, March 13.
GENERAL MANDERSON.
Ex-Senator Manderson spent twenty
four hours in Lincoln this week. He
was called upon by many friends. He
talked frankly of his candidacy for the
presidency, and t,ave assurance that he
would not stand in the way of McKin
ley's nomination.
McKINLEY.
The Lincoln McKinley club was or
ganized in Y. M. C. A. hall Tuesday
night. W. Morton Smith was elected
president, E. E. Spencer secretary, and
J. D. Knight, treasurer ard a central
committee of fourteen waB appointed by
the chair. Arrangements were per
fected for the expression of preference
for president at yesterday's primary
elect on. Thursday night there was an
immense McKinley mass meeting in the
Funke opera house. It was presided
over by W. Morton Smith, and addresses
were made by 1. P. Kennard, O. W.
Webster, ex-Judge Reese, Fred Wood
ward, I. M. Raymond, F. W. Collins, A.
J. Burnham of Auburn, Tom Smith,
Squires, C. M. Parker, L. L. H. Austin
and E. E. Spencer.

B.G.Dawes: "If the fight Mander
son is now making against McKinley
should divide the Nebraska delegation
then Nebraska cannot hope for the sec
ond place on the ticket but it will go to
that locality which does furnish the
needed help. Very possibly California
and the extreme west will swing solidly
into line and in case they do they should
be entitled to the second place on the
ticket. On the other hand if McKinley
is nominated on the first ballot as the
eastern papers are now predicting then
the second place will go wherever it will
help the ticket most. I am of the opin
ion that the strongest ticket would be
McKinley and some man from Califor
nia. If the republican party goes to
California for a man that man should
be Harrison Grey Otis. Mr. Otis is a
man of national reputation and one
whose ability and integrity qualify him
for the office of president as well as for
presiding officer of the United States
senate. If such a man as Harrison Grey
Otis is nominated for vice-president
there will have to be no excuses made
nor any comparisons between the presi
dent and vice-president that are dispar
aging to the latter."
