What, in heaven's name, would he have said of the play presented at tho Lansing theatre Tuesday night? Mr. Potter Eassed over all the refinement in the ook and extracted all that wis gross, and added coarseness of his own. ilo caricatured Svengali and burlesqued one of the most dolicate stories ever written. The play is common, uncanny, and the players in the company seen here this eek succeeded in robbing Du Maurier of any slight credit the dramat ist may havo accorded him, and made the play melodramatically repulsive. In the first act nearly all the characters aro burlesqued. In tho second, the revel in tho studio is manufactured out of whole cloth and passes the border line of decency. It was realism carried to an objectionable point. The remaining two acts were a decided improvement. Miss Crane is a competent actress. She could have made a better "Trilby" if Mr. Potter had written a better part. Svengali was ridiculous. Little Iiilleo inspired pity. Taffy and the Laird were weak and womanish. Gecko came out well in tho last act, as did Zou-Zou. Mme. Vinard was well nigh perfection. But the play dispelled any allusions the book's readers may have had. It was bald, uncouth, depraved, inartistic, in delicate, grotesque. The book is artis tic, delicate, refined, natural. The dramatization of "Trilby" is worse than tho dramatization of "Faust." W. M. S. 1 1 PAINE, WARFEL & BUMSTEAD. The stock and good will of tho Bald win Tailoring company have been pur chased by Paine, Warfel & Bumsteid, and this firm is prepared to cater to the first class trade and supply high class tailor made goods at about two-thirds of the Baldwin price.
